Some computer advice, please?

Last year in september, I bought a fujitsu laptop, complete with the windows vista operating system. It's a light weight laptop, and its very nice..For months, i've had no viruses, no pop ups, and no physical damage. whats even more amazing is I go all over the internet, and still! No viruses, and not a single pop up. Its better then my last laptop: a gateway.





The gateway: from the first day I got it, I experienced problems. The very first day, the stupid disc tray wouldnt work. I got all sorts of viruses on it..Keys just randomly (and i do mean randomly) started falling off..When we sent it to bestbuy, they brought it back with one hinge dented and busted. So we sent it back, and they fixed it.


Then the stupid charger wouldnt work, and we sent it back..


When we got it back, i STILL couldnt charge it, so we sent it back again. Now its finally fixed, but when my dad was trying to connect to the internet, one of my cats knocked it off the table. and broke it..





We sent it back..Now everything was fine..UNTIL, the hinge was broken again..And it was the same hinge..


I had it for 1 year until I decided to get the fujitsu..





Unfortunately, on janurary, i was finished using the fujitsu, so i hit the power button..it shut off but the fan still kept going...So assuming it was still on, i pulled out the battery..It worked..But now I couldnt turn it back on..No matter what i did, by charging it, and waiting a day, or by cleaning it. I did everything, but it wouldnt turn on..





So I sent it to california, to be repaired by the manufacturer.


Basically, the thing just...Shut off, and never came on again..


They told me to wait 8 to 12 weeks..


Then they say 6 weeks..We call them on the 6th week, and guess what we're told?


';give it 16 to 18 weeks';





BULLSH!T!! I WANT IT NOW. I'm a writer!! I have journals on there! and plus, because the stupid disc tray wouldnt open cuz the laptop shut off, I HAVE A DVD IN THERE!!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!


so now im stuck on a computer that shuts off randomly, and is slow as hell..I cant work on this computer!! I NEED MY COMPUTER





And I had a story on there..I was on chapter 16..And why am i worried? because everytime we send a computer, it gets returned to me with all the memory erased..my dads already yelled at them..they have yet to hear me YELL





so now, dad tells me..';lets get you a desktop, and when the laptop comes back, give it to your sister';





This is the complicated sh!t this thing put us through..So now what should I do?





Should I get a new laptop, or a desktop? I don't move around much..So i was thinking a laptop but..Which is more powerful?


A desktop or a laptop?





Either way, I do not want to wait 16 weeks to get my laptop back. I already spoke with a customer there, and apperantly..Shes waited 5 months for her laptop..

let me get one thing straight


u can never compare laptops with desktops


i have HP530


im using it for the past 6 months on an average of 12 hours per day


n its gng smoothly


the main advantage of a laptop is that u can roam around with it


if u r not moving alot


or a laptop or a desktop is same for u


then i think u shud opt for a desktop


desktops are more trouble free, easy to handle


as a writer i would suppose that primarily u r just gng to do typing on ur system


so my advice


get a normal desktop system


n


u when u get back ur laptop u can give it to ur sis


and keep it as a stand by

Get you a refurb desktop for temp use while you do not have your laptop.


Another thing when buying a laptop do not buy cheapest one you can find remember you get what you pay for.
First off, in regards to your story with the problematic laptops, if there telling you longer and longer times, the first thing you do is get on the phone with them and go up the corporate chain until you are talking with someone who ';will'; help you. Just keep demanding, not asking, literally demanding to talk to the persons superior and dont take no for an answer.





Onto the question of the laptop vs the desktop. Laptops are becoming more and more powerful with each generation. Theres not much a desktop can do that a laptop cant keep up with. Since you say your a writer, a laptop would be more conventional. Desktops are easier to repair however, with a little know how you can usually fix these problems yourself.





if you do decide to get a laptop, i would look for features such as safedisk hard drives in them, as they can be dropped and banged around a bit and not crash. If you have the money to spare, you could go for a ruggedized laptop, a little more expensive, although they can be dropped on concrete and in some cases submerged in water and still work just fine.





on a side note, assuming they didnt zero out or replace the hard drive, you can always use a undelete tool on the hard drive once you get the laptop back to recover the files that may have gotten deleted.
holy crap batman take better care of your PC's. yanking out the battery while the laptop was still on is a perfect way of wrecking it. You should obviously get a desktop as you seem to have problems taking care of a laptop





You should have backed up your data on a flash drive or something before sending you laptop off. Its very likely that your old laptop is fried and you wont get any data or your dvd back.
Ok, i suggest getting a toshiba laptop if its just for writing.. but for lasting i'd suggest an Acer. (Toshiba is strong)


My mum has had this Acer Aspire laptop for years.. Still works perfectly fine. oh ****. forgot to mention. keys fall out of laptops and acer's are specially known for it (only if you bang them hard enough) and i mean HARD. lol i accidentally broke some keys coz i dropped it :(
