'; in a graphics card,what is the memory for? ';
On the graphics Card with a Graphics processor, the Processor is like a teacher who writes on a blackboard ( RAM) the more RAM you have onboard the Graphics card the more the data that can be written onto it. So with more memory onboard you will get better display capacities. But remember that beyond a certain point the amount of RAM would not make much of a difference unless and until you need to play Graphics intensive PC games.

If there are more memory slots on the motherboard of the computer then, yes , you can add more memory. You can also take the RAM chips that you have onboard and replace it with similar but higher capcity ones.
'; what is the motherboard? ';
Motherboard or the Systemboard is the main constituent of the computer. It is on this board that all of the deifferent peripherals ( Graphics Adapter, Audio Adapter , Modem, Ethernet card etc of the computer are situated. It has different kinds of slots for all thgese different peripherals. On some motherboards the above mentioned peripherals are also built in in form of different chips (Integrated Circuits) that provide the above functionalities.

Motherboards are sometimes limited by the BIOS and also the Operating System as to the amount of RAM that they can make use of. I do not believe that it takes any kind of on specific '; makes '; of RAM. Certainly different motherboards take different processors. Depending on the kind of processor that one wants to use one needs to get a matched kind of Motherboard. This is the reason why the Servers have different kinds of motherboards than normal home use computers. Now during the present time, this difference is becoming rather fine as more and more people want to get high capacity gaming computers.Proffessional computer advice please?
There are two types of RAM. One is on the video card and used for faster display and refresh. There is Mother Board RAM that is used to shuffle date from the disk to the processor and peripherials. The type of motherboard used will determine the amount of RAM you can use. It is controlled by the on board chip set. The type of socket and support chips also determine the type of processor it can support. On some systems, with built in video connection, part of the system RAM is used for the video. These are usually cheaper systems.
