I really need some computer advice please?

My computer was fine before yesterday. I don't know much about them, but I have three computers hooked up on the same 2 wire DSL modem. Two are upstairs, which have wireless antennas. For the main computer, I have line filters hooked up so I don't get bumped off when the phone rings.

Since yesterday afternoon, when a call comes in, my broadband link goes out, and stays out. (it flashes red) until I make a call out... The broadband goes right back on! I don't get it! What is happening, and what can I do to fix this? Thanks so much for your help!!!! :)I really need some computer advice please?
Possibly the filter went bad or wasn't good to start off with. They should had provided you with more than one right?I really need some computer advice please?
DSL filters aren't supposed to go on the computers, they're supposed to go on the phones in the house to prevent them from causing problems with the DSL. there might be a version of DSL that requires it for all connections, but that would be new to me.
I agree that it could be a problem with one of your filters. I would try unplugging all of the phones except for 1 and then calling you number and see if it goes off. If so, change that filter with another filter and try calling and see if it goes out. If you have extra filters go ahead and filter jacks that don't even have a phone plugged into them. Verify that NOTHING else has changed not with the alarm system or other tenants if it is an apartment building. Unfortunately, the next step is really a call to your DSL provider so they can do some tests on the phone line.
call your ISP help desk and they will walk you through the t/s and submit a work order if you have something wrong-such as bad or improper filter. Filters go on the phones not the computers, so you scared me right off!

Did i give good COMPUTER ADVICE?

a buddy of mine wants to take his computer in for service, but he is concerned cause he looks at a lot of porn stuff ( legal i assume but he is in a very religious, and nosy, community and it would be embarrassing ) i told him once you use ccleaner secure delete ( even just the 3 passes ) it would be damn near impossible for anyone to retrace his browsing steps, true?

i am pretty knowledgeable on computers and while nothing is impossible with today's technology it is very unlikely a pc repair shop would be able to undo what ccleaner destroyed, am i right or what?

can i tell him to rest easy?Did i give good COMPUTER ADVICE?
Well it sounds like you removed all chances of somebody poking around and finding anything. CCleaner does a great job at removing file history and browsing history easily. I would also imagine there are certain legal ramifications, and client information privacy policies that keeps a professional computer service center from talking about, or even looking at, personal files.

I would say to rest easy, if you ran CCleaner, it's taken care of.Did i give good COMPUTER ADVICE?
Well . . . really no data is safe in the long run.

Heaps of stuff can be recovered when erased from a harddrive, the police and army can actually recover a surprising bit from harddrives.

I doubt that the PC repair shop would even attempt to recover data from the hard drive, it is going in there for a service right? So really all they should be doing is making sure the system files are fine, replacing bad parts and so forth.

It's not like your handing the hard drive over to the CSI or stuff like that, its the PC Repair shop so relax!

Note: I am not sure of ccleaner's ability, it could be really good, I don't know. Haven't used it.
Don't worry the computer repair people aren't going to spend hours of their time trying to recover stuff that has been deleted, especially if it has been overwritten 3 times.

And even if they did find any porn they prob won't even care, unless of course it was illegal which would mean they would have to report it.
if this person is worried about things on his computer that was erased. there is a software called software and file Shredder. this is the software that the government use. doesn't cost much to buy. great to have around.

I need computer advice?

I want a laptop to play a certain game whose specs. haven't been realeased yet. But anyway I want a Acer at circuit city with 4GB of RAM and 250GB hard drive. My question is, Would it be better for the game to run smoothly if I got one at 3GB RAM and 320GB hard drive? Like sacrificing a GB of RAM for 70GB of extra hard drive?I need computer advice?
well 1st off, acer laptops aren't that good. But if you want games to run smoothly on any laptop, you need more ram, not more hard drive space. You will only need more hard drive space if you put alot of games onto it.I need computer advice?
I would say no, it's easy to get a bigger hardrive and 250gb's should be fine for you for a while, on the other hand it will be allot nicer to have 4gb's of RAM, excpeially if you are running vista. The game and opperating system will run allot smoother with 4gb's of RAM...
u usally need more ram to play a more sophisticated game, because usually the game doesnt take up that much space
Extra storage will not increase the speed of your computer. Memory will, but here's another question. Do you know if the game you're waiting for will run on Vista 64 bit edition? The laptop with 4gb ram will definitely have the 64bit version of Vista instead of 32bit. The 32bit version will not recognize 4GB of ram.

Also, find out what speed the hard drives are. 7200 rpm drives will pull data faster than 5400 rpm drives will.

Personally, I would wait for the minimum requirements for the game to come out before I made such a purchase.
Either way should be fine, the one thing you need to check is what it requires for a video card (RAM) Thats the area to focus
Is the 4g ram laptop 64bit? Without more info I would go with the 4g ram laptop. I have an acer aspire 8920 series laptop with 64 bit, 4g ram and two 320g hard drives. The speed and l2 cache specs are more important than capacity.
hi.

actually, you would need a better video card in your computer, like and NVidia card, in order to get better quality in your videogames. Video cards take the job of processing all related to video like rendering 3D images, so you might need a computer with some video improvements.

if you only can decide for any of those 2 computers you mentioned, I would recommend the one with more RAM.

  • I have a Vista computer connected to my home network. When I turn it on, it crashes my network. Any advice?

I have three computers on the network, a laptop connected via wireless router, an XP machine connected wired through the router, and the Vista machine connected wired through the router. Everything worked fine for about two months, then one day I turned the Vista machine on and it crashed my network. It even makes all the lights, except the link light, go out on my cable modem. I've tried reloading to the last known good point and that didn't work. I've tried changing some of the security settings also.I have a Vista computer connected to my home network. I need computer advice from graphic designers.?

I am on a low income budget and I am looking for a laptop that will fully support programs like Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop and be reliable. I know that all of these programs are offered to run on Windows. I also know that Mac is above all in the Graphic Design field. Is there anyone that has expierience using a specific Dell or HP that has been reliable for you or can you reference to someone elses experience? Please don't just answer with Mac. I know that Mac is preferred. I am looking for something more affordable. I am thinking $700 and under.I need computer advice from graphic designers.?
I do all my design work on a HP Pavilion laptop. here is a link to all the info about it. http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-pavil鈥?/a>

i have been doing graphic design work on this laptop for 3 years now. I have the entire Adobe cs3 suite on it. works like a charm!

I cant afford a mac either lol, but what the hell it gets the job done. isn't that all that matters....

Could you give me advice on fixing my network/internet connection on my other computer?

On my PC, I can not access the internet because of a local area connection. I opened all the networks, and it says the internet is plugged in, but a network cable is unplugged. I have no clue what that is. It says it is an intel pro/100 VE network connection. Does that mean there is a loose wire somewhere? How do I get my internet back? Any help will be MUCH appreciated. Thank you so much!!!Could you give me advice on fixing my network/internet connection on my other computer?
The message that you are getting may not be referring to an actual hardware issue, but instead a software problem. The Intel Pro is your Ethernet Controller Adapter driver and yours may just be ';corrupted.'; Simply uninstall it and then reboot your computer. With Windows XP when your computer reboots it will auto-detect the NIC and then reinstall the driver. Contact me if you need further assistance.

Hope this helps!Could you give me advice on fixing my network/internet connection on my other computer?
    Check all your physical connections
The network cable is the one that looks like a phone one, but its slightly wider, that is the connection that it is saying is unplugged. It could be unplugged at your computer, or the router / modem, or the router could be turned off. Or you could simply have a bad cable.
Your network cable is your enthernet cable ruunning from the modem to the computer check that first then if the modem is connected by the usb rerun the cd that came with the modem also check in your device maniger that your computer is reading the network ports and lastly u might just need a new enther port.

I need some computer advice? :(?

Okay, so our family computer recently got a virus that has shut down task manager as well as many other options on our computer. I'm aware that we have to reset our system, but until that gets done there are still some programs that I need that are not on my laptop. For example, itunes. All of my songs are on the main computer. I'm wondering if i download any songs and then update my ipod that it will corrupt my ipod and/or itunes as well. I can wait if it will, but I really want to put some songs on my ipod. :-\. anybody have any experience with this?I need some computer advice? :(?
It is quite possible that the iPod can get a virus.

It's not a matter of attacking the iPod directly it is a matter of attacking a USB or Firewire mass storage device.

It is quite possible that the iPod can get a virus, it could be a large text file, or a text file with linking in it that would take up the CPU. it also wouldn't be difficult to build a virus that lives on the computer and searches out the ipod when it's connected (Their is a signature to each removable device) and corrupt the system files on the ipod, or to rewrite the system boot so the ipod doesn't launch. these have all been done to a computer, so there's no reason why it couldn't happen to an iPod, since it is essentialy a computer.

also, viruses that corrupt files are called worms. and they don't actually corrupt them, they just overwrite some of the file data with the viral code so that it can replicate itself. I've done some research into this, I purposely stuck an infected file on my iPod, let it run over night, did a virus scan the next day, and it had indeed spread. even though the boot sequence for an ipod is different from windows or a mac, virus compilers can always find ways around this.

    NOTE :

1.Always take a little time to keep your computer clean %26amp; clear without a virus.so I do it this every time you update your iPod. .I need some computer advice? :(?
i suggest you use malware bytes it's an extremely good program i have tried all of them but this in my opnion can remove every sort or computer virus without harming any files on your pc

    CPU and basic Computer Advice?

The part that makes it hard to choose, is that i also would like to play games on it such as GTA San Andreas.

I dont know if its just me, but i think the computers with the GOOD graphics card (512mb dedicated) would be more expensive than to just buy a computer with a bad graphics card then upgrade it afterwards.

I know ram should be at least 3mb, harddrive should be at least 250gb, but i am not sure about the CPU specs.

How much should i be looking to spend for just the tower?

here is one list of computers i am looking at:

    http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/subclass.asp?catid=10607%26amp;mfr=%26amp;logon=%26amp;langid=EN%26amp;sort=3%26amp;page=0%26amp;list=

    CPU and basic Computer Advice?
Well GTA San Andreas isnt a demanding game so you wouldnt need a great graphics card. Usually, you can find graphics cards for cheaper. A 3.0Ghz dual core CPU would be good, not to mention relatively cheap. I say spend about $400-$600 for the tower alone.CPU and basic Computer Advice?
GTA San Andreas doesn't really need a very good graphic card, a mid-class one will do the work.

2GB RAM is enough, but if you prefer 3GB, that's better.

Dual Core CPU will satisfy your needs. (either Intel or AMD)

I need some computer advice about ISP / and internet connections?

    situation goes as such:

    1) i have no connection to int exp. the bottom right side of my computer says ';Local area unconnected, and connection unplugged';

    2) my ISP is disconnect, and says i may be in the midsts of a firewall...

    3) the verizon tech support operator came to the conclusion of ';check your D-link, and make sure your connected'; which i am (i've checked everything pertaining to the connective cord and all lights show good). Only the ';Wlan'; ligh is blinking on and off smoothly, same with the ';status';.

    4) the computer i'm on has the ';d-link'; next to it, and is the main computer. meaning i'm connected to this computers D-link.

Perhaps i need a mother board is what my uncle says, i have no clue what he means by that...I need some computer advice about ISP / and internet connections?
NO nothing to do with the motherboard. Check the status of the network on your computer in Network places. Does it say ';Connected';? If no, check if there's a password on the network.

If Your D link is working fine then there's no prob with the connection. I dont think the LOCAL connection has anything here.

Also check if the DSL itself is working. Try connecting a laptop to it which has an integrated wireless, you'll know where the problem is.

Good luck. If it all fails.. Reinstall D link %26amp; try again or call ur service provider. Btw u need D link drivers on all the computers using it.

need help my system ram in 412 mb and I wonder if i can get any kind of external memory to counteract that? Like usb stick flash drive for games would that help at all? I want to build a great pc in the future but am dealing with the one I have right know how can I Upgrade memory or ram externally. Also I have sdram is it possible to upgrade my pc to ddr2 memory? I have an e machines amd 3000+ 2004 rig with 160gb kinda old is any of this do-able without having to get a new Motherboard?I need some computer advice im a stupid NOOB....?
You don't need external memory. It won't help for what you want. What you want to do is to add more memory modules inside. Go to

    http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ind鈥?/a>

download the scanner and it will analyze your computer and tell you what you need.

Changing to DDR2 would require a new motherboard which would require a new processor.

Yay or Nay?Buying a new computer... Advice please?
    Is this a prebuilt?

If you look up these components on sites like TigerDirect.com, you'll see what each peice is worth.

Seems kinda pricey for me and I see no pattern to your build.Buying a new computer... Advice please?
Wherever you buy a computer from, ask for a copy of windows xp pro as well, I've seen Toshiba has started to offer windows xp pro (fallback) as well as vista (preinstalled) for their laptops.
If my math serves me right, thats about $1250 USD. I would never advocate anyone go to Dell for anything these days, their PC's are borderline OK for most things, but their tech support might as well be nonexistant. Any customers I've had with Dells that had hardware problems were always left out to dry, or had to stay on the phone for hours just to be told to reinstall windows and loose everything they have installed.

Acer computers seem to be pretty decent for regular use and not too expensive, and I've always had good luck with their products. HP and Sony are good machines, but generally come with way to much preinstalled crap. Im not a big fan of Vista, and if you wanted a XP machine youll usually have to wait longer to get it or pay a few dollars more. It all depends on what you're planning on using the computer for I guess. If its for gaming, dont get a PC with a video card that doesn't support DirectX 10 for future gaming support. Also a 128MB PCI-E card and 256MB PCI-E card cost about the same these days retail, and I would definetly reccomend at LEAST 256MB.

If you're not opposed from buying from private sellers or small companies, check out eBay. I just did a quick search and found this - Item# 230187571225

All except the GeForce 6100 video (which is OK, but not great for gaming) it seems like a good deal. And usually people and companies on ebay a willing to add stuff to their machines. Plus it's using an AMD 5600+ cpu, which is a dual 2.8ghz core and pretty fast.

But if it were me - no, thats too much for what you get. Look around, don't fall back to just the big names, look around.
    Yay

ask them to partition the hard drive 50 gig for C: and remainder D:

    move My Documents to D:

    install any programs to C:

but anything the User does (eg word document) is on D drive.

if you doing study or buisness, I suggest to make sure you can plug two monitors in the video card. Ask about that.

    You can go 2x 19 in monitors or 1 X 22 inch

to use 1 x 22 inch as a dual display can be messy

    I need some computer advice..................?

Ok, I bought an HP desktop 5 months ago and have been building off of it ever since...My specs right now are AMD Phenomx4 1.86GHz, 6gb DDR2 ram, Nvidia 9400 GT 1gb, 500gb hard drive, 300 watt PSU. I want to buy new case, CPU, graphics card, and PSU.....Do you have any suggestions of what parts to buy? I really want to get a core i7, but I need a new psu.I need some computer advice..................?
If you got the cash an i7 would be nice, 6GB DDR3, an Asus motherboard (my favorites), and a GTX 260 video card would make for a nice, future proof machine. The rest would be up to you. Just make sure to find a motherboard with high FSB. You'll be fine. A new PSU would be wise and and a full tower case would ensure your GTX 200 series video cards would fit.

I really need computer advice! Please Help!!?

I just bought a new version of Windows XP for my computer. After I installed it, my internet won't work. It won't set up to how it was even though I have an ethernet connection directly plugged into my computer. I also have reset both connections as well. ALSO, once I installed the new copy of Windows XP, it started running slow when windows were open. I can't move My Documents without it stuttering. It looks like the whole screen is refreshing each time I move it instead of being able to see the window go with the mouse. Every time I scroll down in My Documents browser it won't scroll smoothly. It also ';stutters'; when it scrolls. Please help! I wanted to install a brand new OS so I can have a new computer but it went the completely other way around!!!!I really need computer advice! Please Help!!?
You need to find the motherboard drivers for your system .... XP is only the operating system ... you need the system drivers to tell the other devices such as your Graphics adapter, network card and the like how to play happily with XP ... download a little program called Belarc http://www.belarc.com ... run it on your computer ... that will tell you what the make and model of the Motherboard is (or it should) ... then go to the manufactures website and download the drivers you need for XP ... Good LuckI really need computer advice! Please Help!!?
Although the others are giving good advice about the drivers. Im not going for it. start over, delete your partition reformat (not the quick version) and reinstall your new windows disk. I think the drivers aren't loaded correctly and reinstalling it should do it. Something happened during install.

For the person who thinks XP is old and boring, Vista is stupid and sucks.
Download and install the drivers for your hardware devices.

You will need to install the ethernet drivers from you motherboard CD or download them on another computer and transfer them with a USB drive and install them on yours.

XP is old and boring and has no driver support for newer computers.
internet won't work - because you didn't install the LAN driver

it started running slow when windows were open - because you didn't install the chipset drivers
after you get the NIC drivers go thru and update the chipset drivers as well. This will help the stuttering. You be able to find it on the Mother boards manufactures website.
I'm not sure about the ';my documents'; thing, but your internet is not working because you haven't installed the ethernet drivers from your CPU CD .
did you change a vista computer to xp?
You say you bought a new version of XP. You didn't say what you had before. I hope that the XP you bought is a standalone version and not an upgrade version. You would only buy an upgrade version if you were going from XP Home to XP Pro. If it is a standalone version then I would re-install it and make sure that you delete any and all partitions that exist on the drive. Next make sure you choose NTFS and it is not quick install. Once you have finished the install you need to go to your device manager and see if the network adapters has either an ';!'; or a ';yellow ?';. If it does then you will have to go to the PCs website on another computer and find your PC in usually the support section of that website. Most of the time they have a drivers and download section for each model. Find the driver for that network adapter and down load it to a thumb drive. Install the driver for the NIC adapter and if it is the right driver then the ';!'; or ';yellow ?'; will be gone in device manager. That should get you to the internet. Once you can get to the internet you can go back to the PCs website and download any an all drivers that may have either a ';!'; or ';yellow ?'; Make sure after you do get all your drivers from the PC';s website, that you go to Microsoft and get ';all'; the updates and service packs. Sometimes if you can't get rid of all of the ';yellow ?s'; in device manager by going to the PCs website, it might be included in a service pack or update from Microsoft update. If you need any further help you may contact me at info@srqcomputerrepair.com.

A bit of computer advice building a pc?

hi i am currently in the middle of purchasing a new comp now i have been quoted 拢250 for certain computer its what i want or 拢167 for tha same thing in bits now i have previously moved a comp into a new case and all worked out fine and dandy, i moved motherboard put everything back in etc, now is there anyone out there who could give me a bit of advice on wather its best to spend that extra to have it all done for me? or some advice on putting it together if i buy it seperate because i am not to sure about installing all the processor and that from scrath i know i proabably sound like a right tool lol!

any help would be great thanks!A bit of computer advice building a pc?
i think i would pay extra to have it already put together. the motherboard, processor, fans, heat-sinks are all easy to install, but can be a bit confusing when actually hooking everything up. PCs ' s look different inside and have different types of connections that you might not be familiar with. so you cant always look at one PC while putting another together for comparison ..... i found out the hard way. it is actually pretty easy if you know what you are doing. if you are confident enough... and knowledgeable enough you might want to do it just for the fun of it. personally i would pay the extraA bit of computer advice building a pc?
I found this site very useful.

    http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/Build.htm

Also remember to earth yourself to a radiator or something. Static electricity can really ruin computer components.
if your sure you are getting all the parts required for the 拢167, do it that way, you will only need a philips screwdriver for installing the motherboard and drives, and a flat head driver to clip on the fan(depending on the heatsink clip).

it is really easy to do, as far as fitting the processor, just line up the arrows.

if you have changed case before you will manage this.
Building the pc takes only a half hour at most, and that is if the front controls are single pin and not in a single connector. The real fun begins when you load the os and try to make everything work. If all the new parts are in a box and come with driver discs, it should be pretty straightforward. Just the choice you make on confidence in your abilities vs. spending the money to have it all done for you. It is fun to build pc's, but the first time can be a bit daunting, as there are a lot of variables, such as selections in bios, finding the latest drivers and loading them, etc.
Make sure ur grounded. VERY IMPORTANT!!!
I say buy it separate! BE sure before you touch anything, you are working on a wood,(or fake wood), tabletop, not on your bed, or carpet floor! Touching the metal frame, frequently, of the computer, get's rid of that. Static 'kills' computers! When you get the parts, come back here, and ask any question you like, or email me, and I'll lead you thru it, step by step. Remember NO question is stupid!
Building your own computer if very satisfying but requires a lot of experience to do it right. There are a LOT of 'gotcha's that can take an inexperienced person a LONG time to correct. It's also possible to destroy thing if not done correctly.

Therefore, if you're not sure, and can't afford to spend a lot of money to correct things if you do it wrong, I would suggest that you have it built and guaranteed by someone that knows what they're doing.

To gain experience, try assembling a computer from spare parts and see if you can get it working right.
It's always satisfying to build a computer yourself, and I have done it twice, however, if the price of 拢250 includes a legitimate operating system, but the price of 拢167 doesn't, then it's probably better to pay the 拢250.
You can save alot doing it yourself, but you need to know about RAM speeds, not just size, or your computer is gonna be slower than it should be. You need to know there are several different cpu socket types and what will work on what motherboard. But the worse part is, installing an operating system from scratch if you've never done it. You can't just use a restore disc, you need an actual windows disc. You will need to partition your hard drive. Once Windows is on, you will need to install drivers for your new motherboard and hardware. If you don't understand about anything I just said, then google it, cause you will need to know. But I'm not trying to discourage you from building one, just don't want you to find out the hard way that you will need a hundred dollar windows operating system cause you thought your restore disc would work.
its better if you build a pc yourself, because its cheaper and you can choose what you exactly want in the pc.
    www.giochipro.com
10% is a good assembly price imho
dont forget to put some big ram in it and dont connect an old motherboard to new components... usually they'r nt compatible and nothing happens
Always make sure to discharge any static from yourself periodically, you can do this by touching a piece of metlat that is stuck into the ground. Discharge periodically!!!

When working on the unit be sure to unplug it, if you prefer to have it plugged then you should wear shoes to avoid shock.

Have a philips screwdriver handy(Majority of the screws that will be used are +%26lt;-philips) , chose a screwdriver that has a slightly magnetic tip just enough to pick up screws that drop into hard to reach places. (If the tip has a very strong magnet it may damage parts so be careful with it too)

Work in a well lit location, preferrably spacious enough to work freely and lay out the parts. If working on a table, make sure its stable.

a small container to put screws in. Losing screws especially when you dont have extras could prove disastrous.

Make sure to check the orientations of components, Do not force components in. PGA processors specifically have markers in order to be attached properly and will easily pop in place with out any pushing when placed right. It's different with LGA's though but the markers are still there to guide you.

Be sure to observe the grooves in RAMs these will determine how they are placed.

And whatever you do: Dont lose the Motherboard's Manual!

    Building my first computer. Advice?

My old computer was a Compaq PresarioS6100NX. Very old.

So I decided it was time to upgrade, I choose to build it myself.

Here are the parts I've picked out so far:

RAIDMAX SMILODON Extreme Black ATX-612WEB 1.0mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Foldout MB Computer Case - Retail

    CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5 - Retail

GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail

I think the case comes with a 500W power suply. I will be using my old CD/DVD drives, and my old harddrive. This is on a tight budget, and as I can afford more, I will upgrade more, stuff like a video card, better powersupply, harddrive, ect.

Will these parts work together? And will I need to buy any cables?

All the parts above I am ordering from newegg.com.

Am I missing anyting?Building my first computer. Advice?
Pretty good build, but what are you planning to use this computer for?

If you're into gaming at all, you'll improve things greatly by:

    1) Replacing the 2.4Ghz quad-core Q6600 with a 3.0Ghz E8400 dual-core

    2) Getting a nice video card- GeForce 9800GT or Radeon 4830 at least (I see you're already planning to do that later)

You'll need a copy of Windows to install... the pre-installed copy on your Presario won't work on different hardware.

Your 500W psu is fine, and yes, XP Home supports 4gb of RAM. You'll be able to use roughly 3.5gb, like all 32-bit Windows versions.Building my first computer. Advice?
All those parts are fine, but you should just wait until you can afford the better PSU as soon as you buy it. It would be a waste to just buy the 500W PSU and then just do nothing with it. I would just buy the case alone, and then get this PSU-

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

This will last you through this build, and you shouldn't have any problems. And don't forget an operating system.
They should work together, but you can never be 100% sure. You are definitely correct in wanting to upgrade the older parts as you can, but as it is it should be a lot better than what you currently have. Being a newer motherboard it will have a new style of connector for hard drives and cd roms, but it will also have a few for the old style like your current ones. The only difference is the new style is faster. The power supply that will come with the case is usually pretty crappy, but it will work for a little while before needing to be replaced.

  • Gaming/media computer advice?

Hey guys i was wondering whether someone could give me some advice. I've been looking at this computer here on ebay

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FAST-DELL-GAMING-P鈥?/a>

and what i'm wanting to do is upgrade the ram and graphics card, i basically want to use this unit as a media pc connected to my lcd and i need something which is fast enough to play the sims 3 as currently my laptop with a Turion 64 x2 cpu is struggling a bit. So will this procssor be any faster?

I don't know much about intel processors, would the dual core xeon processor be any faster? As i said i do plan to upgrade the ram and graphics card if i buy this computer base, but i just need to know if the cpu it decent enough or?

Any advice would be great thanks.Gaming/media computer advice?
ok... you can buy a pre-built gaming pc for 700 quid

anyway a xeon processor is actually for a workstation and an AMD equivalent would be an Opteron...

    try getting the Scan 5200OC

    from...

this system would last you a great length of time...although if you are only intending to play Sim3 and not of a game which requires more performance...than it would be an overkill.... but nevertheless it would be better than your laptop

You need to know what type of laptop is preferred at your college. Do they insist on PC's or Mac's first of all.

If Mac then it is easy.

If PC, pick one that is substantial with a good warranty even if you have to pay extra, you don't want to lose everything just before your finals in 3 or 4 years time.
i know that you said dont get a mac, but you should. i have had one my whole life. never used an anti virus program, yet ive never had a virus. always runs fast. internet works great. problems are amazingly easy to fix. you want a 13 inch macbook pro. easy to use. there are many tutorials at apple.com

you can buy from apple.com also

there is lots of memory. long lasting battery. trust me. 13 inch macbook pro.

I have that motherboard and so far its really good!

Also with the Vista or XP, I would go for XP for another year or so, I really hate Vista, Im thinking of going back to XP, and for the HDD's go with 500gb to 750gb, maybe stick with 320gb onesNeed some computer advice.?
not sure of xfx products. Never worked with them.

For the vista xp thing. what you should do is install both os. I was fighting the issue myself. Vista is awesome with the right equipment. You need a good graphics card. I would spend at least more than 50. You should get 4 gbs of ram. Look into Corsair. Best ram Makers. Thats all you should need for vista. just maker sure its all compatibale. I have my computer with xp and vista. IF you have 2 hard drives just install them in diffrent disc. Or partion the one hard drive. You need at least a dual core cpu to handle vista.
haha well, getting that mobo is really only good if ur going fer an SLI setup... If your going fer 1 nvidia card, then choose a diff mobo.... preferably an ASUS one (love them haha)... go with xp since it won't go out of date... (I have friends that still use windows 98 and love it!) I would not recommend buying new hard drives unless you actually use all 320 GB... I have more games than anyone I know in person and I can only reach about 250 GB!!! X-P... don't forget to check compatibility between the parts!!!

your PSU is useless, it would be much useful if your is a GTX280 SLI or a 4870 CF or a 4870x2. try changing to another harddrive, some SSD are not stable. Building a Computer... Advice on parts list please?
All you did was select the most expensive parts and put it on here a ATI Firegel is a workstation graphics card not a gaming graphics card try the ATI 4870x2 or Nvidia GTX280. The processor is a joke first of all nothing even uses Quad core so its just going to be a waste plus if you don't overclock might as well get the same exact processor the Q9650 but the best processor is the E8400 because both of those processors are made from those 2 cores. If your going to get a Intel motherboard get the ASUS Rampage its a lot better. DDR3 is a big waste and not needed DDR2 Dominator is the best . Your case sucks get the Antec 1200. Don't you dare buy a SSD get a Rapter drive. You do not need a 1200psu get like a ABS 950 or 1000. And the best fans are Aerocools.
Screw Fans, water cool that puppy
Vista 64bit = more than the 3.5 GB limit of 32bit.

DDR2 works fine, get the 800 MHz stuff.

And because it's not DDR3, you have SLi technology for the MB.

OK, so the run down I would do is Vista Ultimate, DDR2 pc2-6400, that $1000 plus Intel Quad Extreme CPU, I don't know about the MB, just the best 775 socket available in standard ATX form factor, and since it runs cooler than most quads out there, just get the best CPU fan and several case fans for the sizzling memory, maybe even some memory coolers. For the PSU, does 850W sound stable?

This should be way way below your 5k budget, but if you wanted to know what the next step would be...try $450 Xeon processors for servers with a $350 e-ATX MB used for mega-data processing with eight 4 GB ram modules. The only other thing that tops this...is the IMB POWER6 CPU running 4.7 GHz for $1500(?) and roughly $20,000 for the finished blade server.
The video card is not made for gaming.

DDR3 RAM is not worth it.

    1200W PSU is not needed...

how much money do you have?!?! :/

Well the video card you chose is not for gaming. Get a HD4870 or GTX 280.

1200W PSU is way unnecessary. You'll be fine with any PSU with over 30A on the 12V rails combined.

You'll probably also want another hard drive that's not SSD, a disk drive, simply because the disk drive is that much bigger in capacity.

If you want to use more than 3GB RAM (yes), use a 64bit OS.

You probably only need an exhaust fan somewhere on the case, preferably blowing out hot air generated by the CPU. If you plan on overclocking or consistently heavy loading the CPU, get an aftermarket cooler too.

Fans are completely your choice. Noisy but powerful or quiet and weak? Newegg reviews and ratings are good for telling which fan is good/bad.

I need COMPUTER ADVICE!! answer please!!!!?

ok, here's the thing i use avira 9.0 and comodo firewall with defense plus

i do not think i need a full time anti spy app like spyware terminator as i think the odds of me downloading something that gets past the new avira ( which also scans for adware / spyware ) and defense plus ( very very little of anything gets past that thing ) is very slim

from my experience, if you know how to use defense plus ( and i do ) it outshines and outperforms ANY anti spy app's real time protection.

although i am no pc expert, i am pretty computer savvy and i think it is a waste of my computer resources when the odds of something getting past those two powerful programs are pretty slim,

BUT, i do have superantispyware, malwarebytes anti malware, and a- squared free as on demand scanners just in case.

isn't this enough, do i really need a full time regular anti spy app just taking up resources with all this other stuff??I need COMPUTER ADVICE!! answer please!!!!?
After your discourse of how great Avira and Comodo is, together with superanti, and mbytes, of which I agree, your question is do you need another antivirus?

What , Avira is the best you can get! Why would you want to remove it and get another one? I don't follow your reasoning. The only nag about Avira is its daily automatic updates. You can in settings turn the auto updates off and set it to manual. Doing a manual update just before you start the scan is all that is necessary.I need COMPUTER ADVICE!! answer please!!!!?
Oh, sorry I misunderstood. Somebody is spying on you! What you mean is a keylogger. Google for a keylogger detector. Sorry I have no experience with them. And good luck.

    Hey,

I don't think you would need anything else apart from this. You are probably just thinking unnecessarily given your description of its protection, and your confidence in it. If you really wanna try something else, you could probably just try the AVG package - lightweight and powerful.

My husband and I have a home desktop computer. We don't have room for another desktop so I am thinking about buying myself a notebook. I would mainly be using it to write journals and work on my stories through Word, maybe get on the Internet a bit too.

My question is, which one should I buy? I'm looking for something in the $500-$600 price range. It doesn't need to be fancy because I'm really only going to be using it to write.

The only problem is, I don't like the mouse or keyboard that comes with the notebooks so can I buy my own keyboard/mouse and attach it to the notebook instead? Or is there something better I should buy?

Looking for any and all options. Thank you in advance!!Need some computer advice...please read below?
You'll probably what to get a Dell. They are usually the cheapest and they run well to. As for the mouse, you can find all styles that will plug into the USB port.Need some computer advice...please read below?
You may the the Apple iBook which costs only $229 or a Toshiba Satellite A105-S2081 which costs $569.If you want a bit costly then try Acer Aspire 3002LCi which is 599.but the cheapest one is Apple iBook CD which is $199.And you can buy a portable keyboard and a mouse which can be easily be kept in your laptop bag
I have not seen a laptop yet that cannot accept a keyboard and/or mouse. This is especially true now, because you can get USB versions, even if it doesn't have a PS2 jack.
Ok well, you could get a refurbished iBook for about $600 -$700 and yes you can just get a keyboard that you like and hook it up. Thats what I would do in your situation.
I would recomend buying either a dell or hp, hps are known for better support but are about 100 more, check newegg.com tigerdirect.com, also, if may also look into things like an ASUS notebook, its made by a motherbord ppl.
A good place to look for laptops in your price range is tigerdirect.com or newegg.com. They offer most brands.

I'm looking to build a gaming computer in the price range of $1000 - $1600. Here's what I came up with: For the motherboard I would use the Asus Rampage II Extreme, I would use duel Sapphire Radeon HD4870 1GB, Intel Core i7 920 Processor, Corsair TX850W Power Supply - 850W, Noctua NH-C12P heapipe cooler, Memory OCZ PC3 16000 - Platinum Edition (2000 MHz 9-9-9), Lite On IHES206-08 Blu-ray Disc Reader with DVD Writer Combo, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit English 1pk, XCLIO A380BK Fully Black SECC 1.0mm thickness ATX Full Tower Computer Case. The only thing i would offer as an option would be to get the Radeon HD4870 X2 instead of dual 4870's

The 4870 X2 is basically two 4870's on the one card. It would be a cheaper option (even though from the rest of the build it looks like money isnt a big consideration for you) and better still, you wouldnt get the performance degradation that you get as soon as you run two cards in Crossfire.
dude your pc setup is like a demon!!!

yes, your hardware is compatible with on another.

you will be able to play games which are going to come in next 6-7 years!!!!

you will run crysis on very high setting @ max resolution+16xAA @ 60+ fps.

note-why buy crysis if crysis warhead is in market.

warhead is better. trust me, i've played both the games.

    New computer advice please?

I need some advice. My 6 year old computer (WinXP) just crashed and I need a new one. It was getting slow anyway. I'd consider a Mac, but all my software is PC and I have never even used a Mac (they also seem very expensive). I have a limited budget (like to keep it under $2000 if possible. I have monitors and external USB hard drives for backup). I don't need a ';state of the art screamer'; but I do need a faster, more powerful machine to comfortably process 21 MB RAW 5DmkII files and one that works well with my Canon 6100 printer. I figure 200-300 MB files will be a routine thing in Photoshop (currenty using PSCS2 and LR2.3) Color management MUST work properly.

I've never used Vista and am a bit gun shy. I have heard there are problems with its ability to retain monitor calibration data, etc, and that color management may be an issue. I have also read about problems getting the Canon drivers and plugins working. A new machine will have some flavor of Vista, but which one? And is XP compatibility mode part of the standard Vista system? Does Vista require any new software or can I use my old Windows XP software?

Suggestions on computer make, deals, CPU, amount and type of RAM, hard drive size and type, video card, etc, would be appreciated. I'd like the video card to have two connections and two video lookup tables for my two Samsung monitors. Any other advice would be appreciated. I'm way out of touch on what to buy and don't want to make a big mistake.

    I would avoid the Mac,

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support

Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en%26amp;q=os+鈥?/a> as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

    ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :

Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.

    1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.

    2) Supports devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).

    3) More business software/games

    4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.

    5) Used by businesses.

    ADVANTAGES LINUX :

    1) FREE (most versions are)

    2) Install software by eitjher 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)

    2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

    SECURITY

Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.

Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.

Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

    VIRUSES

Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think ';they are safe';.

    QUALITY/PROBLEMS

Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to ';lower the price'; and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.

With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.

IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac ';look different';, if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: (At The Moment) Specs Below costs $809

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

If you are close to an Apple store, you have to take a look at the iMac. A great computer that will blow you away. I think you would be making an enormous error in staying with Windows.

You can buy all the Adobe programs and Microsoft programs for the Mac and the documents that you already have will work just fine.
    ibuypower.com

you can customize it with the stuff yuo want....

    but i would reccomend a

    core i7

any motherboard will do it doesnt matter....

    6gb of 1333 ram(or 12 will be best)

    2tb of hardrive space

    and a gtx 285

this will last you for a long time
    .
    Get a MAC.....

Not much, but I have a dell, DO NOT GET A DELL
vista basically samehtign as xp mroe toys and better looks

i would reocmend a laptop since thats whats really popular these days and their jsut as powerful and good as desktop.

go to best buy or future shop, they have excellant service to help you find EXACTLY what u want.

if ur going for pc, i reocmend HP, they have nice designs and great service and at affordable prices

macs do run under 2 grand so if u want to try somethign new, go for a mac ormacbook cause they are very reliable and a good choice if u want to try something new. u can expeirence it at best buy they have setup displays for u to see.

like i said, go to best buy and they will HELP YOU

    gl
1- there's nothing wrong with vista, it's a perfectly usable OS

2- if you're feeling a bit adventurous, or you have some experience with computers/ DIY, I would recommend building your own computer from scratch, it would cost you a lot less for a much better machine

^email/IM me for help if you choose to build your own

other than that, you can get a powerful pre-built computer for under 2k, and probably under 1k.

a decent at best computer could even cost you as low as $300

*almost forgot, you should stick with vista home premium, basic is terrible, and ultimate is unnecessarily overpriced
    Start here first... http://computers.toptenreviews.com/home/

This should give you a general idea of the latest %26amp; greatest.

In my opinion, it would be in your best interest to remain w/ XP. If you purchase a new PC w/ Vista, it is highly recommended to pay for the downgrade back to XP. Reason being, most of the software you're referring to as well as the hardware may not work passed XP, same is to be said with the MAC's...it all boils down to compatibility. Vista has been notorious for compatibility issues with both hardware and software. It sounds as though you have an extensive array of both that you built around XP. XP was and continues to be a very stable OS with the ability to handle the majority of all software and hardware produced. As far as building a PC and the different hardware peripherals that you specifically need for design and/or imaging, it will pretty much breakdown to software and/or hardware requirements, always go bigger than what the requirements suggest for best performance obviously. As far as suggesting specifics, the categories are quite broad as the selection of hardware is immense and manufacturers are plenty. I suggest visiting a few Tech Review websites, which after reading a few reviews will propel you back into the loop so to speak.

    Good Luck!
I have a 7 year old windows XP computer and it still works good. The thing is, if you want fast but cheap go laptop. Laptops will get you pretty close to your budget. For about 900-1200 a Dell XPS laptop looks good Just go to www.dell.com and search XPS. If you REALLY want a Mac, you can put windows xp on it, dont know much about that, i would google it or use youtube, or use yahoo answers. as far as RAM and that stuff ift depends on your computer needs. Gaming, Media, etc. The xps model comes in gaming and media center edition. So I would go with a Dell Laptop (Doesn't really need to be xps) If you NEED a desktop get an XPS Desktop and you can google for dell cupons.
for your budget you can easily get a computer that meets your demands

i would recommend a Dell, HP, Asus, Fujitsu Siemens or Mesh

Vista had its issues but 99.9% of these issues have been ironed out with service packs and updates as needed so compatibility etc shouldn't be an issue

all you need to worry about s dual monitor support and for this you will a computer that has a graphics card that supports this

    hope this helps

Old Computer Advice: Fix it up or buy a new one?

I'm looking for a desktop to take back to school with me so that I can lighten up the load on my laptop a little bit. We have a desktop, which minus the operating system, is in about the same condition that we bought it. However, we did buy it about six to seven years ago, and obviously, it's a little outdated in today's high tech world (it has a floppy disk drive, this is how old we're talking.)

Mostly it would be used to lighten up my laptop, basically games, (I'm a big Sims player), maybe my music (about 20 gigs of) and leaving my laptop for web surfing and word processing. Without getting into specs, would you say it would be cheaper to fix up the old one (to bear in mind, I do have a copy of Windows XP) or just scrap the whole endeavor and buy a new desktop?Old Computer Advice: Fix it up or buy a new one?
you have a whole host of options:

    1. stick to the laptop: if you just want to free up disk space, I would recommend moving your music to DVD's or getting an external harddrive. If you have the ability, you can buy an external hd enclosure and put your old computer's hd in that for more storage space.

    2. use the desktop: i'm sure a 7 year old computer can run Sims without a hitch. As a general rule, any up-to-date computer, at the time it was released, can usually run games released within 3-5 years of it's release.

    3. upgrade the desktop: if you have the ability, you can update parts of the computer rather than the whole thing. put on the programs you want to run, and check for any issues with speed or game quality. then, upgrade the part that you need for the applications you want. As a general rule, a computer from 6-7 years ago (2000-2002) probably needs a new CPU and motherboard. you probably also won't be able to recycle the graphics card or memory, so changing the CPU generally means cleaning out the whole insides. This sounds daunting, but a decent (for Sims) cpu/mobo combo will probably cost less than $100.

    4. Buy a new desktop: you can probably put a decent one together for less than $200. It's far less of a headache than trying to recycle old parts, and at least you know it will work. I am buying a new computer, but the day it gets here, I have to install the dvd, OS, and sound card.Old Computer Advice: Fix it up or buy a new one?
buy a new one and keep the monitor or whatever you have. Dell has some fairly cheap and decent computer for under 500. You could also check out their outlet. I have an outlet laptop and its been running for a few years no problems.
Depending on what you want to upgrade, if its 6 years-old some parts my not be around anymore. We need to know what you have and what your trying to upgrade to.
If its 7 years old you might be better off buying a new one
The main issue will be games, an old desktop will most likely struggle on todays game requirements.

In its day it was probably cutting edge technology but now days games are requiring at least a Gig of memory and quite high end graphics cards.

An old PC is perfectly useable for web browsing and music though, just not the thing you need for games.

    Gaming Computer, Advice plz.?

Hi, im building a Budget Gaming computer, This is what im going to get, tell me if its good or not.

Motherboard : XFX nForce 680i LT

CPU : Core 2 Duo E8400 2.4 GHz (will overclock with zalmen)

Graphic card : Nvidia 8800 GT

    RAM : 2 x 1GB DDR2 800

    PSU : RoseWill 550W

Case : Broadway Com Corp 939PL-BLACK Computer Case

im totally noob with computers. Tell me what u think about this build. ThxGaming Computer, Advice plz.?
Everything there is fine, but get a 9800GT instead of an 8800GTs since they are about the same price, and the 9800GT overclocks better. Don't forget an optical drive, hard drive, and operating system.Gaming Computer, Advice plz.?
Do you mean your going to overclock with a Zalman cooling system?

I'd probably upgrade your 800MHz to DDR3 1333MHz to sync with your processors FSB.

Umm I'm kind of pondering your decision on the mobo, do you plan on upgrading to using SLi in the future? If not then
That's ok but if you really want to game most people don'tt want to spend the money. I would build off off of the new Intel i7 processor. With the raptor 10,000 rpm hard drive. 6 GB of ram, would have to run SLI and that would require a bigger power supply probably 700 watt.
Like what the person above said, I would change out the graphics card to a 9800GT. Other than that more RAM would be beneficial and you can get 4GB for $25 after rebate on newegg.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>
Does that motherboard have an Intel chipset on it? I looked it up but couldn't find it for the tech specs. Make sure it has an Intel chipset on it. Running one with a VIA or nvidia may reduce performance since it's an Intel processor.

Be careful when overclocking the processor as well. I have a Core 2 Duo in my computer running 2.4GHz as well, and I run half life 2 at full resolution and full frame rate with no problems. I have a slightly higher end video card as well. My personal opinion as a technician, don't overclock the processor. If you want more performance bump it up to 4GB of RAM.

The rest looks good to me spec wise for budget.

EDIT: Just saw your links. May I recommend this motherboard to you instead?

    ICT Computer advice please.?

I have just disposed of a broken Acer 1520 laptop and replaced it with an Acer Aspire 9300, a similar later model with 17 inch screen. Question is, can I use the charger, should I need to, of the 1520 to charge the Aspire 9300? Input and out put details are almost the same. The only difference is the older charger shows 19V out put with 7.1A whilst the charger with the later machine says output 19V with 4.7A. The polarisation is, of course, the same. Both chargers are in good order and as new but if it's dodgy to use the old one I'll dispose of it. Thanks for help.ICT Computer advice please.?
It will be fine. The laptop will only draw the power it needs so no need to worry about the ampage being higher.....ICT Computer advice please.?
No problems, your charger will not get as warm as it used too, that's good.

    Some computer advice, please?

Last year in september, I bought a fujitsu laptop, complete with the windows vista operating system. It's a light weight laptop, and its very nice..For months, i've had no viruses, no pop ups, and no physical damage. whats even more amazing is I go all over the internet, and still! No viruses, and not a single pop up. Its better then my last laptop: a gateway.

The gateway: from the first day I got it, I experienced problems. The very first day, the stupid disc tray wouldnt work. I got all sorts of viruses on it..Keys just randomly (and i do mean randomly) started falling off..When we sent it to bestbuy, they brought it back with one hinge dented and busted. So we sent it back, and they fixed it.

Then the stupid charger wouldnt work, and we sent it back..

When we got it back, i STILL couldnt charge it, so we sent it back again. Now its finally fixed, but when my dad was trying to connect to the internet, one of my cats knocked it off the table. and broke it..

We sent it back..Now everything was fine..UNTIL, the hinge was broken again..And it was the same hinge..

I had it for 1 year until I decided to get the fujitsu..

Unfortunately, on janurary, i was finished using the fujitsu, so i hit the power button..it shut off but the fan still kept going...So assuming it was still on, i pulled out the battery..It worked..But now I couldnt turn it back on..No matter what i did, by charging it, and waiting a day, or by cleaning it. I did everything, but it wouldnt turn on..

So I sent it to california, to be repaired by the manufacturer.

Basically, the thing just...Shut off, and never came on again..

They told me to wait 8 to 12 weeks..

Then they say 6 weeks..We call them on the 6th week, and guess what we're told?

    ';give it 16 to 18 weeks';

BULLSH!T!! I WANT IT NOW. I'm a writer!! I have journals on there! and plus, because the stupid disc tray wouldnt open cuz the laptop shut off, I HAVE A DVD IN THERE!!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

so now im stuck on a computer that shuts off randomly, and is slow as hell..I cant work on this computer!! I NEED MY COMPUTER

And I had a story on there..I was on chapter 16..And why am i worried? because everytime we send a computer, it gets returned to me with all the memory erased..my dads already yelled at them..they have yet to hear me YELL

    so now, dad tells me..';lets get you a desktop, and when the laptop comes back, give it to your sister';

This is the complicated sh!t this thing put us through..So now what should I do?

Should I get a new laptop, or a desktop? I don't move around much..So i was thinking a laptop but..Which is more powerful?

    A desktop or a laptop?

Either way, I do not want to wait 16 weeks to get my laptop back. I already spoke with a customer there, and apperantly..Shes waited 5 months for her laptop..

    PLease help..

(PS: sorry i made this so long)Some computer advice, please?
    dude

let me get one thing straight

u can never compare laptops with desktops

    i have HP530

im using it for the past 6 months on an average of 12 hours per day

    n its gng smoothly

the main advantage of a laptop is that u can roam around with it

if u r not moving alot

or a laptop or a desktop is same for u

then i think u shud opt for a desktop

desktops are more trouble free, easy to handle

as a writer i would suppose that primarily u r just gng to do typing on ur system

    so my advice

    get a normal desktop system

    n

u when u get back ur laptop u can give it to ur sis

and keep it as a stand by

hope this helpsSome computer advice, please?
Get you a refurb desktop for temp use while you do not have your laptop.

Another thing when buying a laptop do not buy cheapest one you can find remember you get what you pay for.
First off, in regards to your story with the problematic laptops, if there telling you longer and longer times, the first thing you do is get on the phone with them and go up the corporate chain until you are talking with someone who ';will'; help you. Just keep demanding, not asking, literally demanding to talk to the persons superior and dont take no for an answer.

Onto the question of the laptop vs the desktop. Laptops are becoming more and more powerful with each generation. Theres not much a desktop can do that a laptop cant keep up with. Since you say your a writer, a laptop would be more conventional. Desktops are easier to repair however, with a little know how you can usually fix these problems yourself.

if you do decide to get a laptop, i would look for features such as safedisk hard drives in them, as they can be dropped and banged around a bit and not crash. If you have the money to spare, you could go for a ruggedized laptop, a little more expensive, although they can be dropped on concrete and in some cases submerged in water and still work just fine.

on a side note, assuming they didnt zero out or replace the hard drive, you can always use a undelete tool on the hard drive once you get the laptop back to recover the files that may have gotten deleted.
holy crap batman take better care of your PC's. yanking out the battery while the laptop was still on is a perfect way of wrecking it. You should obviously get a desktop as you seem to have problems taking care of a laptop

You should have backed up your data on a flash drive or something before sending you laptop off. Its very likely that your old laptop is fried and you wont get any data or your dvd back.
Ok, i suggest getting a toshiba laptop if its just for writing.. but for lasting i'd suggest an Acer. (Toshiba is strong)

My mum has had this Acer Aspire laptop for years.. Still works perfectly fine. oh ****. forgot to mention. keys fall out of laptops and acer's are specially known for it (only if you bang them hard enough) and i mean HARD. lol i accidentally broke some keys coz i dropped it :(

  • 10pts. computer advice. about a driver..?

soo.. i kept getting this blue screen that told me that my ';driver was stuck in an infinate loop';. and i copied the name of the problem which is called ati2dvag . I searched on my comp and i found a few drivers and such with that name.

Since i know very little about drivers and computer info.. whats the next best thing to do to fix the problem.. shoudl i just disable these drivers.. or how shud i do it.. how do i know what they are connected to so i can find new ones for that.. specific advice wud be greatly appreciated. and of course 10 points.

this wud really help me as i am struggling here in college. i am alone.. and i have a huge paper i wrote.. but i keep getting this screen and i wud lik to fix the problem so i dont have to buy a new tower. thanks..10pts. computer advice. about a driver..?
Nice, except she didn't tell you how to do that right. Here is some advice on your video and how to resolve the issue:

You DON'T go into ADD/REMOVE, you go into Control Panel, System, Hardware Tab, Device Manager, click on it...then a tree will appear with the devices on your computer, click on Display Adapters by expanding the ';+'; sign. WRITE DOWN the name of your Display Adapter, you will need this to find the right driver for your video card.

Ok, click on the NAME of the display adapter and right click and choose PROPERTIES.

    Click on the DRIVER tab.

Write down the VERSION of the driver.

Now, go to the ATI site and identify your operating system XP or Vista, and then from the NAME of the video card, select the video card by scrolling down the list on the right hand side. Here is where to go to get the driver:

    http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Make sure its the right one! A wrong driver will screw things up.

Do not download the CATALYST program, just the DRIVER for the video card only, you can go back later toget the CATALYST program.

Download the driver to a temp file so you know how to find it, or download it to your desktop, for example if that is easier for you.

Now, go back to DEVICE MANAGER, right click, properties, DRIVER TAB, ROLL BACK DRIVER.

Roll back ALL drivers...until XP warns you that you will have no driver. Uninstall ANYWAY, just do it! This will force XP to use the stock VGA driver installed in the driver database as default driver.

Reboot the computer, and don't worry. EVerything will be in a horrible 480 X 640 resolution. Not to panic! This is the stock VGA driver working.

Find the driver file and click on it. Install the driver throught the ATI program that came as a file you downloaded.

Once installed, then right click on desktop, choose properties, Settings Tab, set Color quality to 32 bit, set your screen resolution with the slider on the left and you are DONE!

Now, if you want the fancy CATALYST program, you can go back to ATI and download it and install it. Make sure you have DIRECTX 9.0C installed and NET FRAMEWORK 2.0 or higher. Check this out in Add/Remove Programs.

CATALYST will NOT work if you do not have NET FRAMEWORK 2.0 or higher installed on your computer. If it is not installed, you can go to Microsoft and download, the current version is NET FRAMEWORK 3.5 and should include all the latest NET FRAMEWORK stuff.

THEN, install Catalyst and use the advanced controls to adjust your settings.10pts. computer advice. about a driver..?
Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new software, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . From http://fixit.in/bluescreenofdeath.html . You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://re7.info

It's for your ATI video card. Uninstall the ATI drivers from ADD/remove programs...then head over to ATI.com and download the drivers for your video card.

    New Computer advice.?

Ok for all you computer PEOPLE out there.

Im looking for a new computer to buy and looking for advice.

anyone know what brand would be good for UNDER $900 bucks?

say a 19' (flat screen) I use mine primarly for music like Youtube..surfing the net and such. I don't wanna spend over that,

Maybe even less if possible..ok, come on people, what's a good brand

I know I can look on Dell and custom make one and all, but would like some ideas First. Thanks!

oh yea, a desktop only though and a good TRUST WORTHY virus protector!New Computer advice.?
Dell, whatever you do don't get e-machines, they don't last more then 6 months without trouble, for what i have experienced and some family members, I got me a great deal at Best buy for a Dell, No better deal then getting a dell~New Computer advice.?
Save up a little longer and get a Mac. Otherwise i would go with HP. Dells are not the quality they used to be. If someone you know builds them have them do that. I am currently building a nice gaming pc for a customer right now and it is costing him only $1000.

    Hello,

If you like you can do as the others suggest and go with a dell (because they are cheaper), but you must know that when you buy a dell, whenever you wish to upgrade your components, no matter what it be, mouse, keyboard, memory or the like. You can buy from no one but dell. (they restrict your upgrade choices only to them) You cannot purchase over the counter computer upgrades, you have to go with dell, or the device will not work. Im not talking about printers or scanners, just upgradables. So it would be best to go with a Mac (apple) since they are less prone to hackers, virus, and sluggishness. But their also more expensive, and but worth it.

Good LuckNeed advice for buying new computer please?
I suggest a Dell for anyone who is not building their own computer. Windows Vista is coming out soon. You may want to wait till it does, so you don't need to switch operating systems right away.

open computer, pull out hard drive(s), set computer by dumpster, preferably on a college campus

disassemble hard drive and keep the ultra-powerful magnets. nail them to the wall in your utility closet and hang tools on them.
I have 4 Dell110/1100 Dimension Desktops 2.53GHz Windows XP Home 80GIG HD, 256MB RAM, 56K Internet ready CD-RW DVD Combo, No floppy, No monitor, they are sold separately. These PC are refurbished by Dell with the warranty. contact jimbo55@hotmail.com
I.M.H.O. Don't Bye Gateway. Take out your Hard drive if you donate your old computers to some one. That is the only safe way to protect yourself.
You can get a good deal from Dell or tiger direct might be a little cheaper but I would go with dell. It's a nice thing that you want to donate your old computer but just to let you know some places wont accept computers that are to old the just don't have enough power to do whats needed.
I think e-machines computers usually have a disk that will allow you to restore it to factory settings. First of all e-machines made horrible cheap computers in my opinion. Anyway it's a good idea to format the drives first and then reinstall everything.

The cheapest way to get a computer is to build it yourself. This I only recommend for advanced users, but you can buy all the components from www.newegg.com

Either that or you might as well purchase what you want from hp or dell. If you have any questions about hardware specifically send me a message. You can also try this http://www.monarchcomputer.com/
I have been computer shopping myself lately. Learning more and more is confusing, however, AMD Sempron is good but AMD Athlon 64 3500 or 64 3800 is better.

AMD is replacing Intel. AMD is much faster, lasts years longer and apparently Intel is one the way out.

Best space and speed to look for: Hard Drive 250GB, Memory 256MB.

I'm not sure which brand is better. Just as long as it has these qualifications is all that matters. And of course price changes from brand to brand.

I wish us both lots of luck.

I would like to start a company related to Computer Hardware (Sales and service), Any advice.?

Find out if there is a market in your area for that sort of business - carry out survey.

Once you have established the company, advertising is the key - deliver leaflets locally, put adverts in papers and get a website (websites project an image of professionalism and provide a good opportunity to advertise).

I do webdesign, so if you want to discuss this further then e-mail me electronic_knowledge@yahoo dot co dot ukI would like to start a company related to Computer Hardware (Sales and service), Any advice.?

I've run into the exact same problem. A lot either don't work, you have to pay up front for something you don't know will work, or whatever. It's not a very easy process to have this done. Hopefully someone will help us out because I was unable to do this as well. Thanks.

If you're running Windows XP then you can do the following to safeguard yourself. Note that you may have to get a more tech-geared person to help you out with the detail of some of these, as explaining how to do all of them from scratch is a bit tough from just this little message box.

    1) Never run anything as an admin unless you're installing software. You can do this by creating a new user under the control panel and giving that user limited access as opposed to administrator access. Log in as this user all the time unless you're installing trusted software.

    2) Install the Firefox web browser.

    3) Make sure your firewall is turned on.

    4) Install some anti-virus software (AVG is an example of free anti-virus software)

    5) Install the Windows Defender anti-spyware program.

    6) Install something such as Ad-Aware or Spybot Search and Destroy and run spyware scans every couple weeks or so.

    7) Do not install software that's not from a reputable company. Some of the shadiest software out there comes in the form of ';cute'; things like puppy screensavers, kitten wallpapers, etc.

Using the type of setup above, I haven't had to deal with any form of virus on Windows for years.Computer advice needed in laymans terms , please ?
It's just the toolbars that got installed from what i'm reading.

When you install everything don't just hit ';next'; make sure you read all the check boxes carefully.

Also if it does come up again, and its a program you should be able to go to add/remove programs in the control panel and delete it there.

If it's something that is attached to your internet explorer, you can go to tools-%26gt;internet options-%26gt;programs tab then click on manage addons and scroll down to the yahoo toolbar and uncheck it. This way it will dissapear from your IE next time you close it and restart it.

Hope that helps, and good luck!
Mionet, Norton, AVG. These are all good anti virus programs. Don't use the yahoo toolbar because it causes a lot of problems. It attracted viruses on my laptop, but dun dun dun I have 8 virus blockers on it and got rid of the viruses very quickly. If you have one good one then nothing should get through except the occasional insanely well programmed virus. In that case you can take you computer into an expert and have it wiped clean and reset up (laymens terms). In any case a simple virus blocker will due.

    Happy Holidays,

Eternal Skeptic has it right. Ad-aware and Spy-Bot are free downloads. Run them at least once a week. Schedule updates, preferably every night.

Set about three hours aside to:

Run clean disk, remove temporary internet files and cookies.

Run Ad-Aware, Spy-bot and any other virus protection (Norton) you may have. Defrag your hard drive and compress old files.
';add ons attached themselves through YAHOO %26amp; internet explorer'; What do you mean? That by visiting yahoo.com through internet explorer some unwanted add ons got installed in your browser? Why do you need to take it in, just remove the add ons. You probably got them from a program you installed. A lot of programs will sneak add ons such as toolbars (if that is what you're talking about) into their installers.
well you might have downloaded a program that included add-ons or istalled an update. If you have that problem again uninstall internet explorer and you can download a brand new version for free at:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx
There are a lot of ways this can happen, and I blame the terrible security in both IE and Windows.

In addition tou just being careful where you browse, you might use a more secure browser. Download and install Firefox.
Add-ons and ';spyware'; can enter your system through several means, but the most common are from visiting some websites, or installing software. Only visit sites you trust, install programs you trust, and open email attachments from people you trust.
dizz, sorry, idk; just writing to ask you if I'm a trusted ';fiend';---lol. Tell your hubby, bonjour please. Thanx!!!
Be careful when opening email from friends and family that have been forwarded from an unknown source. That's one of the main ways viruses spread.

Also there were some links on answers that lead to sites that attack your PC.
Be careful with downloading ';free'; programs such as emoticons and such. If you read the fine print, you'll see that they often comes with strings attached, such as toolbars or adware.
Call someone who knows about computers and they can explain also try geek squad.
Buy an antispyware or antivirus program
    Eternal Skeptic what he said%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;
Well .. I'll consider you have a valid copy of either Windows XP SP2 upgraded to SP3 or a valid Windows Vista SP1. If you run the automatic updates that come as an option during the installation of either of these operating systems, your computer should be somewhat safe.

Since you're using Internet Explorer, I'll also assume that it's the latest version and fully patched. Also, you might want to turn the ';Automatic Phishing Filter'; on .. it helps block unwanted content .. anything that could contain malicious programs or information.

    ----

Dictionary (in case you really don't know the 'scientific' terms:

    - SP = Service Pack (a pack incorporated in your operating system that contains most of the things the OS needs in order to run properly)

    - Auto Phishing Filter = A filter that blocks unwanted content from all the websites you visit, by itself, no need for you to do anything. Only to set it up. (you can find 'phishing' on google)

    ----

Also, you might want to turn on the Pop-up Blockerm this would block all the pop-ups that appear automatically on some websites .. usually advertisments, some times virused links ..

Oh yeah .. to be eevn safer ... get an anti-virus .. :) Kaspersky, NOD32 should do their job fine.

    Kiddo.
