Hello I own a Compaq Desktop and I play on-line games my computer seams to be running quite a bit slow does anyone know what i should upgrade i have a 512 and 256 ram sticks in it and i am not sure on what else ?
Any help is good help : )Computer advice wanted?
Since you have a 512 and 256 RAM, I assumed that you got a P4, an equivalent or a higher model of PC. What you missed to mention is your internet connection, if it's a DSL, broadband etc. or a Dial-up connection and the video card. If you have a DSL or a Broadband connection and if its doing ok in terms of speed and stability then what you need to find out is the Video card. It must be a 64 mb type of video card at least, the higher the better and it should be a separate card and placed in the AGP port not the built in one( placed alongside the game port, USB ports, parallel port etc.). If you're using a Dial up connection then you better think of upgrading it to DSL or a broadband. And don't forget to check you're processor(PIII, P4, an equivalent or higher), FREE SPACE in you're hard disk(point the mouse to the local disk(c:)-DONT CLICK - A SMALL BOX WILL APPEAR. the LARGER FREE SPACE THE BETTER) AND THE SYSTEM'S HEALTH( if it doesn't hang up and has no error). AND VIRUSES ALSO.Computer advice wanted?
first, defrag the hard drive. then check for spyware with a program like asquared. then if you have dial up internet get broadband. finally try a better video card.
Try this - go to run and type /msconfig
go to the start up tab and check everything off it that you dont require on startup (this will make your computer much faster in getting started).
If your running windows XP change your desktop to display in classic mode (this will increase your computer speed by about 40%)
Delete all spyware, adware, viruses, and any other junk on your computer, these tend to use up process time and if left to their own devices will slowly clog up your computer... Shareware programs are usually crammed with lots of lil bugs, i suggest you use eMule.
If your struggling to delete viruses do a system restore (but save anything you've downloaded recently to disc) or reformat your hard-drive if your computer is totally f*cked up.
Other than that you could increase your RAM even further, but other than that your pretty tied down to your processor speed... If thats still not enough get a new computer ^_^
Yes, pack that thing full of RAM.
Here are some maintenance suggestions that should help in speeding up your computer.
1. Clean out temp/internet and recycle bin (right click on Local Disk C: and choose properties, then Disk Cleanup)
2. Run msconfig (from Run) or startup.exe from http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml... to stop any unwanted programs from starting up.
3. Run an antivirus program.
4. Run an anti-malware program such as Ad-aware PE from www.lavasoft.com (it's free).
5. And finally, run Disk Defragmenter from Start%26gt;All Programs%26gt;Accessories%26gt;System Tools%26gt;Disk Defragmenter.
Please note that Disk Defragmenter that comes with Windows is not the best defragging tool. You might look into using something like Diskeeper which is a much better tool.
