Advice on broken computer--daughter dropped it?

I know this is a LOOONG shot, but my daughter managed to reach our laptop from its spot on the desk and she dropped it. Everything works fine as far as it starting up, but the screen doesn't work now. It is black or, at times, white. I was wondering if there is any way to connect a computer screen to a laptop, or whether anyone had any general advice or ideas as to how to fix it? Thank you.Advice on broken computer--daughter dropped it?
well, first see if the laptop is under warranty beacuse if it is they will probably replace it. Next take a lam,p and hold it up to the screen and look closely, if you see anything then it is just the backlight or a loose clip. Also, if it does boot up try placing a vga cord to it then using the function keys to swich to the mkonitor. if that dosent work then the laptop is pronbably shot. also, your hard drive might be broken, they are relativly fragileAdvice on broken computer--daughter dropped it?
It sounds like the connection to the screen may have came loose (its just a little cord, its happens a lot too). Its a simple fix warrantyour computer is still under any kind of warranty opening the case would void it.

In the case of conneccting the Laptop to a new monotor, there is a cable you can use, if you go to like best buy just tell them what you are trying to do.
Yes you can connect to a external screen/monitor but you would need the lap top screen to do it. Take it to a computer repair store like Frys Electronics (http://www.frys.com) or the one I use (Quality High Tec Services (http://www.QHT.com).

Hope this helps
it is possible if your laptop has another vga port on the side or and the back. What to do is buy a monitor and hook it to your laptop via VGA cable(normally blue) and boot your thing and press FN+F2 i think? or check your keyboard and look for a little square icon in the F rows
More than likely the LCD screen needs to be replaced. You CAN hook up an external monitor to your laptop.Plug the monitor into the vga connector plug and reboot.
You can connect an external monitor to the video port on the back of the computer and use it that way

Advice,computer smart-guys?

I posted a question yesterday and a smart-@ss replied that I ';shouldn't be surfing the internet if I didn't know how to maintain my computer';...well...duh,sorry I don't know what to do...I'd like to know!! What exactly is it that I should be doing to properly take care of my computer? These are the only things I use it for: Email, yahoo messenger, read on-line newspapers,Myspace, post frequently on a pregnancy message board, and look up random things for informational purposes. What should I be doing exactly and when for maintenance?

Thank you!Advice,computer smart-guys?
Never mind, we all learned the hard way, we surfed and get infection, cleaned up the PC and start again more carefully.

Yet it's important to install a good antivirus program to keep you away from viral trouble.

Important, If you have sensitive and private files on your PC, then you should backup them into CDs so that you are safe even if a virus formatted your PC.

Regards,

:)Advice,computer smart-guys?
Nothing much.

All you should do is:

- do a virus scan and spyware scan every week or two to prevent anything bad from happening. If you know you haven't been on any virus-lurking websites, maybe you can do one every 3 weeks.

- Update windows every two months. This will help you keep your Windows new and makes it stronger against any nasties on the web.

- Update your anti-virus program and anti-spyware program often. This will help it track down more viruses in your computer.

- Defragment your computer every month or so to speed it up slightly.

- Clean out any useless files (Temporary internet files, history etc.) to speed up your computer and prevent any errors.

Well, I think that's about it to healthy computer maintenance.
Use few tips From Below...

Free Up Disk Space

By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.

Use Disk Cleanup to

Remove temporary Internet files.

Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Remove Windows temporary files.

Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.

Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

To use Disk Cleanup

1.Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.

Disk Cleanup dialog box

Disk Cleanup calculates the amount of space you will be able to free.

2.In the Disk Cleanup for dialog box, scroll through the content of the Files to delete list.

Disk Cleanup for dialog box

Choose the files that you want to delete.

3.Clear the check boxes for files that you don't want to delete, and then click OK.

4.When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the specified files, click Yes.

After a few minutes, the process completes and the Disk Cleanup dialog box closes, leaving your computer cleaner and performing better.

Speed Up Access to Data

Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.

Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.

When to Run Disk Defragmenter

In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals, optimally monthly, certain events warrant running the utility outside of the monthly rule of thumb.

You should run Disk Defragmenter under the following circumstances:

You add a large number of files.

Your free disk space nears 15 percent.

You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

To use Disk Defragmenter:

1.Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.

Disk Defragmenter dialog box

Click Analyze to start the Disk Defragmenter.

2.In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives that you want to defragment, and then click the Analyze button.

After the disk is analyzed, a dialog box appears, letting you know whether you should defragment the analyzed drives.

Tip: You should analyze a volume before defragmenting it to get an estimate of how long the defragmentation process will take.

3.To defragment the selected drive or drives, click the Defragment button.

After the defragmentation is complete, Disk Defragmenter displays the results.

4.To display detailed information about the defragmented disk or partition, click View Report.

5.To close the View Report dialog box, click Close.

6.To close the Disk Defragmenter utility, click the Close button on the title bar of the window.

Top of pageTop of page

Detect and Repair Disk Errors

In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.

As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult, or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.

If you use your computer daily, you should try to run this utility weekly to help prevent data loss.

To run the Error Checking utility:

Important: Be sure to close all files before running the Error-Checking utility.

1.Click Start, and then click My Computer.

2.In the My Computer window, right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.

3.In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.

4.Click the Check Now button.

5.In the Check Disk dialog box, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

Check Disk dialog box

In most circumstances, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

6.If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them.

Tip: Only select the Automatically fix file system errors check box if you think that your disk contains bad sectors.

Protect Your Computer Against Spyware

Spyware collects personal information without letting you know and without asking for permission. The information that spyware collects ranges from a list of Web sites that you visit to usernames and passwords. In addition to privacy concerns, spyware can hamper your computer's performance
The important thing when surfing the internet is to use common sense. If it seems to good to be true, it is.

People will try to trick you if they can.

Etc on my space, if people you don't know send you any links, delete and block then.

Don't click links you don't know what is, don't install any of those fancy tools bars, animated cursors or funny msn smiley's

Make sure you have a antivirus program, that updates it self, so you always have the latest signatures.

Run a weakly virus scan, and adware scan ( http://www.safer-networking.org )

If your using Windows XP, make sure the firewall is enabled

Start -%26gt; settings -%26gt; Network connection -%26gt; Right click your connection and choose, properties -%26gt; advanced -%26gt; Settings.

The XP firewall is more then enough, and doesn't use any extra resources.

When you install freeware programs, always make sure you don't install any of the sponsors software, as it's always adware.

Common sense will get you a long way, help you stay safe.
You should have a good firewall, make sure you update your antivirus definitions regularly and run scans, install some anti-spyware products and run them regularly and use both a pop-up blocker and spyware blocker.

I would like advice for a computer I am going to get please explanation below?

I am getting a new computer but I only have the MAIN part (the hardware part) any advice on what to getI would like advice for a computer I am going to get please explanation below?
Im not sure really what your saying. So your saying you have a Dell computer that your making upgrades to, or that you just have the computer without a monitor, keyboard, or mouse? Go into a little more detail because I am sure that is why no one commented on this yet.

Moving to los angeles, need advice on how to get my computer there?

okay i dont know if this is the right section for this question or not,but im moving to los angeles this summer and i love my desktop computer and i wanted to know the easiest way of getting it from here to there? im going to be flying there, but i wanted to know if the best thing would be for me to ship it with UPS or what? thanks guysMoving to los angeles, need advice on how to get my computer there?
I think the BEST thing to do is use a servise like UPS...take the computer th them and let THEM pack it...then they can gurantee that it will arrive in good condition.Moving to los angeles, need advice on how to get my computer there?
Best thing I can say is UPS. Make sure you have it packed right so nothing will break. Take it to the nearest office and make sure that you tell them that it is a computer and very fragile. Get insurance on it, so if it does break the post office is resonable for the package. Good Luck
I agree with Charlie.....give him the points.

I would first check with your local UPS office to make sure that they will pack it for you.....If not, try Fedex / Kinko's as I know that they provide the service of packing your items and guaranteeing their safe delivery!

good luck

Someone please help, I need computer virus advice???

My computer sometimes goes fast, then other times it'll go very slow, sometimes the websites won't even open, i'm pretty sure I have a virus, can you recommend me any good anti-virus programs to get rid of them, if there are any free programs i would appreciate it more thanks :)Someone please help, I need computer virus advice???
NOD 32 makes a trial version good for 30 days. I used the trial for 30 days and have the licensed version now.

You need more than just a good anti virus though.

Keeping a windows system clean and healthy is now a three pronged approach:

1) Anti virus - ONE only. Never attempt to run more than one anti virus program on your system.

2) Anti Malware/Spyware program - I use windows Defender, it's free from Microsoft.

3) Software firewall - I use the NOD 32 version that incorporates a software firewall. If you have Vista, the windows firewall is fairly adequate. If you have XP, I suggest a different product than windows firewall.Someone please help, I need computer virus advice???
Why is my computer slow? I bet you have asked yourself that very question time and time again. And for the most part, you probably just can not figure it out. Ask the guy next to you, and they probably don’t have the foggiest idea either. I mean, you may get the “spyware, virus” answer, but this most likely is not the case.

The first place I check when my computer starts to run slower is the registry. Yes, the registry. Most people don’t even know what, or where the registry is, and especially don’t understand how this can slow a computer down. Let me explain.

Basically, the registry files contain information and settings for all of the software, hardware, operating system software, and anything else running on your computer. Mess any of these files up, and the computer does not know how to function. The computer goes to start up the software, looks for the registry files, and either can not find it or finds something that does not look like it is suppose to look like. It then just sits there: it does not know what to do next. This is where the “hanging” or “locking up” of your computer comes from. These files will need to be fixed.

To fix the registry files, find a good quality registry repair software called registry cleaner and run it on your computer.Top 5 registry cleaners can be found in here:

http://www.make-pc-fast.com .It will tell you how many files are corrupted and need to be fixed. Just tell the software to fix it and it restores all of the registry files to their correct configuration. It is really that simple. It may take only about 5 minutes to perform this check. And then as a maintenance item for your computer, I would recommend performing this registry fix at least once a week. This will always ensure your registry files are good, and keep your computer running with no slow, freezing and errors. So if you find yourself asking why is my computer slow, I would check the registry files first.

Now you can check out

http://www.make-pc-fast.com/ ,there are reviews of top rated registry cleaners and a clear guide to tell you how to speed up your computer. And from there you also can get a free scan to fix any problems such as computers slow, computer freezing, computer errors and getting the blue death screen.

Hope that can help you.
might not be an actual virus, yor pc might just need a 'spring cleaning'.

I don't think you computer have virus, Check your RAM and Internet Speed, if you are using dialup internet then it is normal to be slow and if you are using ADSL broadband connection then check your RAM minimum 512, if it is less then 512 then upgrade the RAM and Delete all the Old History and Temp Files stored on your computer and for Anti Virus there are many Norton is best
i would recommend you

getting AntiVir PE Classic/AntiVir Home Edition Classic

or Norton Anti virus...but the 1st one is most successful

i would really recommend that one...
Check what is running on your computer

Computer purchasing advice?

I need to purchase a new PC for my home but I don't trust the sales men @ any of the local electronic stores. We use our current computer for web surfing, email, photo storage/printing, some light word documents, and music downloads/storage. My daughter also plays a few games like bejeweled on it. I was thinking about possibly replacing the PC w/ a laptop but it would all depend on the cost. Can anyone educate me on what to look for? thanks!Computer purchasing advice?
Sure, since you don't do any real graphics intensive gaming then we can get you a cheap computer that is good, and if you do game in the future you can always slap a video card in there and then you have a gaming PC.

I build and sell computers, if you were around my area I would sell you my newest build, but this computer from newegg.com is a steal.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

That computer will do you wonders, good video card, good ram, good processor, good hard drive and only for $300!Computer purchasing advice?
From your description, your family is a light user of the PC. Mostly using it for Word Processing. Therefore, you should look for the following:

1) CPU (processor). Intel with 2 or more cores

2) 2Gig of RAM (memory) or more

3) 320Gig of Hard Drive space or more

Almost all newer PC will have the above as they have become standards. You do not need high end PC or a high end Graphics Card. These would be needed if you were a heavy gamer or Vidoe editting.

I recommend that you go here: http://www.newegg.com

Look at their PCs and laptops. Those who purchase them right reviews, hence you can get a lot of good advise from ';non saleman';. I sure you will find a good PC at a good price there.
You CAN get a laptop but just keep in mind that laptops are very limited to upgrades and are more problomatic to detect issues. I would adjust a desktop www.newegg.com has some GREAT prebuid cheap ones with great features but if you want bang for your buck make sure to look for

AMD CPU computers I use them in my system,

1. AMD's are the underdogs who when they test them they think ';no it cant beat intel'; and sure engough bang.

2. They are cheap and FAST FAST FAST FAST FAST

3. For ram 2GB or 3GB will help you dont buy 4GB because they will charge for installing a 64-bit OS which is required to run 4GB

4. 200GB HDD are very cheap I got mty 640GB for 50 bucks and 200GB sounds good to me based on your info

5. CD/DVD reader is best if you dont plan on making DVD if so get a CD/DVD burner 20 bucks

6. It would be best to build your PC, but if you dont know how and would like to have everything setup

Gateway, hp, and sony are the bom acer too, NEVER NEVER EVER NEVER EVER buy DELL they come installed with programs you dont need and that slows down your PC
the best deal for your category would be to get a Laptop .... %26amp; if you still want a Home Pc then get a custom pc with the following specification

320 gb /500 gb hdd SATA2 7200rpm

Intel P4 3ghz Processor

Intel Original DG31PR Motherboard

Kingmax or Transcend or Zion ram of 2gb (a single ram of 2gb not 2 rams of 1gb)

Multi speed DVD writer

A printer that suites you for your Profession %26amp; Please get an Original XP/Vista (I dont recommend Vista) we dont want anymore piracy of this great OS.

Thank you :)
try a laptop available with the brand names HP / DELL / AVIO or THOSHIBA those are really nice ... by the way make sure it got at least the specs shown below ...

a 2.0 dual core processor or a 2.66 core 2 duo processor or higher

2 gb ram if your using win xp / 3 gb ram if your using windows vista

dvd writer inbuilt

at least 128 mb vga inbuilt (needs full pixel shader and dx10 support for windows vista to run properly with aero theme)

15 '; / 17 '; laptop lcd display

at least two usb ports or more on the back panel

sound card onboard

160 gb hard disc or a higher capacity hd
It sounds like you're looking for a budget build. You don't need the latest quad core CPU, a fancy graphics card, or a blu-ray drive. You should be looking at computers no more expensive than $500 to suit your needs.

I would recommend looking for a system with an Intel CPU from the E5000 series (E5200, for example). This is a low cost CPU that performs well and will do everything you need it to. You'll probably want to avoid quad core CPUs as they are more expensive and unnecessary for your needs.

System RAM (memory) should be in the 2-4GB range. No less than 2, no more than 4.

Integrated graphics, also known as IGP. You don't need anything special to play bejeweled and the computer will be cheaper if the graphics processor is built into the motherboard rather than a discrete graphics card. Most low cost computers will have integrated graphics anyway.

DVDR. No blu-ray. These are cheap and will let you play/burn CDs and DVDs. Blu-ray is expensive and chances are you aren't trying to watch blu-ray movies on this computer anyway, are you?

OS. Vista home basic is fine. No need for ultimate edition or whatever other expensive upgrade they're offering.

Warranty. They'll want you to purchase the extended warranty which will probably cost over $100. You should be covered by a 1 year manufacturer warranty and the 30 day return policy at the store. It doesn't make sense to pay hundreds of dollars for a warranty on a computer that's already covered for a year and costs less than $500 to begin with.
The cost of a home PC has dropped so much in the past year...it really is amazing....I used to build them for people I knew because I could build cheaper than you can buy. Now though...unless you need a high-end development/graphics machine or a beefed up gaming box, no builder can compete with the major manufacturers anymore.

Here's one example at best buy: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?鈥?/a>

This machine is not ideal, but I would be hard pressed to tell someone on a budget that it wouldn't be good to them for at least 3 to 5 years. Granted, eMachines are not noted for reliability, but the specs on this are fine. And it's $299 (without a monitor).

Things I would be sure to get though, if I wanted a box that would keep up over the next 5 or 6 years:

No laptop...because of the inadequacy of cooling systems on cheap laptops, they tend to have a 2 year life at best. Not worth it when you can spend half that amount for more computer.

2 gig's ram

200 gig hard drive

CD/DVD RW

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (I would pick intel over AMD).

Windows Vista Home Premium (basic is a little too trimmed down).

That kind of box shouldn't cost more than 500 bucks, and will last you 5 years at least. It'll be compatible, and it'll have plenty of growing room.

  • I am having problems with my computer booting up. Any advice?

I have a toshiba infinia 7130 and it is like 5 7 yrs old. But it worked great. However, I was in the middle of a game and it crashed. I re-started the computer and received the following screen:

We apologize but windows did not start successfully. It give 4 options:

    Safe mode

    Safe mode with networking

    Safe mode with command prompt

    -and-

    Start windows normally

I hit start windows normally and it continued, but a quick blue screen with error messages flashed, and it rebooted. It continues to do the same thing. It won't do safe mode. I unpluged everything, put another hard drive in, and went into CMOS setup. (hitting delete to enter setup key when starting computer)

I don't know what is happening? Anyone have an idea? Thanks.I am having problems with my computer booting up. Any advice?
It sounds like you have a serious software corruption or a hardware failure. You put another hard drive in, did you install an operating system (Windows, Linux) on that hard drive? If you didn't your computer won't boot because there is no OS. Do you have the Windows installation disk? Try doing a recovery on the original hard disk from that if you do.

Failing that you could try a Linux LiveCD to start your PC and try to fix the hard disk errors.I am having problems with my computer booting up. Any advice?
Did the new drive boot? Did you run a RAM test?

    http://www.memtest.org/
You probably should have gone into the safe mode at the start, and backed up all of your files. 20/20 hindsight, for what it is and is not worth.

You installed a new hard drive, which is a good start for troubleshooting. However, what are the errors that show up? Did you reinstall the Operating System? Or did you just ';ghost'; everything over to the new drive?

If it is not a software problem, I would guess that there may be a problem with the motherboard.
What message does it give you when you attempt safe mode? That will help to give a proper diagnosis. Most of the time when this happens it is a problem with a file in the XP operating system getting corrupted. You can use an XP boot disk to get to a command prompt, and attempt a 'chkdsk /f', or you can use the same disk to repair a corrupted windows installation.

I want to start recording my songs on my computer - Advice please?

    Hi there,

I'm a songwriter and musician and want to start putting my songs down on multitrack but using a computer.

Someone has suggested Cubase or Reason.

My main question is - how do I record singing as there is only a little mini jack and my microphones have 1/4 inch jacks on them.

Also, I'm a bit of a technophobe so it has to be a really simple programme. To start off I'm only gonna need about 8 tracks. I'm used to analogue recording with reel to reel and old fashioned stuff.

Are there any groups out there where you can learn step by step how to start hard disk/computer recording????

I hope someone can help with all these questions!lol

You may wanna get a digital MTR.

Try check these packages. They are a bit expensive because they have everthing you need, but check the MTR/Hard disk recorder in the package if you don't need other stuff .

hello, i need to get a colour laser printer for my workplace...

    does anyone have any recommendations?

i want as cheap as possible but obviously good enough.

can anyone tell me a a3 or a4 printer which they think is good

thankkkkkkkkkkkksNeed a3 colour printer but need advice, anyone computer smart out there?
All I can tell you is that four techies with lots of experience have all agreed that you will not go wrong if you look at a printer made by Canon. This is not an endorsement. I am just tell you what they told me when I asked them about printers generally. Apparently, that company makes a very good printer. I had this confirmed by four different techies. I ask you, how often do four techies agree upon something?

basically the file is in use so nortons cannot repair it. So what you do is boot in safe mode where only a small amount of the operating system is used, allowing nortons to repair it

you could boot in safe mode then run your nortons or do what I paste below.

Norton live Safe Mode virus scan

    ========================

    1. Go to this link, below, and save it in your favourites. Save it up at the top of your favourites drop down list, otherwise you may not be able to see it in safe mode. (drag it to the top)

    Close the window

    2. Turn off popup blocker on your browser or software.

    3. Turn off system restore as long as you are confident you don鈥檛 need it.

Right click my computer icon %26gt;properties %26gt;system restore tab %26gt; turn off.

This will delete all restore points. (System restore can harbour virus)

    4. Boot in safe mode with networking by tapping f8 key in the first few seconds of turning the computer on.

    5. Using your browser in safe mode with networking. open your browser and go to the link, choose antivirus scan, it will take quite a time to install but stick with it. It will ask to install active x controls which also take a while to install. Don鈥檛 interfere, just wait a while. Run the scan when it asks. You can also run the antivirus checker afterwards all while in safe mode.

    6. Reboot normally, turn on system restore and create a restore point.

Yesterday we reported on an alert from Norton Anti-Virus of a trojan called ';hacktool.underhand'; appearing on a number of user systems.

It was subsequently determined that this was a false positive generated by Norton Anti-Virus, and in fact, Norton Anti-Virus' attempt to eliminate the non-existent ';trojan'; can cause a host of other issues, including kernel panics and extreme slow-down in some applications.

    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?stor鈥?/a>

    I would contact Norton.
It is a MISTAKE not a VIRUS

according to the Symantec (Norton) support site this is caused by a false positive on MAC computers. It is not a virus, just a mistaken message when it thinks it did find one.

the solution is meant to be to download newer updates to the virus database.

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/num鈥?/a>
use boot time malacious application execution,

though the virus will be there they will not be active during normal operation.

Advice in buying a new computer?

I am a 16 year old with an interest in technology. I have a decent job and have a respectable amount of spending money, but I would rather not spend more than 1000 dollars. I want to buy a computer that will not completely suck with in two years. I don't need a fancy graphic card or anything, just a computer that I can run a lot of things at one time and store a lot of music and such. Also I am considering switching to Linux so if you have any suggestions about that id appriciate it.Advice in buying a new computer?
Good idea. You have a lot of good choices. Remember, 2 GB of RAM is crucial to multitasking. If you ever edit movies or Photoshop, make sure you have a good CPU as well.

    First of all, 1000 bucks is what is referred to as the ';Budget PC.';

Here are a few recommendations for your PC, whether you're building it yourself or looking for a prebuilt PC.

    CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo e6300 or 4300

RAM - 2GB RAM (look on newegg.com if you want help with this)

    Motherboard: This one looks good:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>

Graphics card: Get a nvidia 7600 GS

Feel free to move up on the CPU or graphics card as needed. I think a 7900 GS is a good step up from the 7600 gs, and a e6600 is a pretty good CPU for the money. Don't buy anything AMD; their systems are not as fast as Intel's as of right now.

As for whether to switch to Linux, well, Ubuntu and Gentoo are considered fast Linux OSs. They're lighter than Windows, but can't game or use exclusive Windows applications such as Adobe Photoshop. Otherwise for ordinary chatting, surfing, and document editing, Linux is fine, free, and fast.

For the ';completely suck'; problem, i.e. the obsolete technology problem, well, PCs generally get 2x as fast every 2 years or so. Basically you might want to learn how to overclock to speed up your PC or get a new one in a few years.

I forgot about the hard drive:

For music, well, a 120 GB hard drive is pretty good. If you want to backup DVDs, a much larger (400+ GB) hard drive is recommended. Getting 2 hard drives is not a bad idea. Use 1 for ordinary PC use, and the other for storage. Also, get a Western Digital Caviar or Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 drive for fast speed at a bargain price. Don't buy Maxtor; they have a bad drive history.Advice in buying a new computer?
    Look for good upgrade options.

Invest in a PC with dual core Intel or AMD

    Get a large hard drive 300GB +

    Get 2GB ram

Spend now %26amp; you won't need to upgrade in 6 months
Don't switch to Linux. Next, if you're\ looking for a good pc on a budget, go with eMachines. They're solid, reliable, inexpensive, and will do everything you want them to. DONT DO DELL. They have a bad repuation of getting really really sluggish on you in 6 months. Don't do HP. They aren't built decently. Another great company is Toshiba. Sony. Again, eMachines. If you're a student, which I hope you are being 16, I believe you can use your student ID to get a MAC. Believe me, you will NOT regret getting a MAC. Even in two years you'll still be amazed at how much you're learning about the Mac. Check into that. But don't do Linux. And try not to do Windows. If you're wondering about the ';limited'; software you hear about with Macs, simply not true. 5 years ago that would be been the truth and all these people who say that had their ideas formed 5 years ago. There are sooo many titles available for the Mac. And they're 10xs better than their Windows counterparts. No viruses. No crashes. And they're so far ahead of Windows that by the time they become ';obsolete'; it's more like 5-6 years into the future.
Finding a computer that will not be obsolete in a few years is difficult. They are improveing them so fast most are redundant the day you buy them. To get past that I built my own. With the help of others. I used as large mother board with plenty of room to expand it as new things came along. My latest addition is a larger liquid cooling fan and a dual processor. I no sooner did that and they are talking about a quad processor and a terabyte memory. You cant win it seems.. With 1000 dollars you should be able to get a very powerful computer today.
im not familiar with Linux,go to apple.com for that.but some of the most important thing when buying a new computer is not to let them with all the dual core or core 2 duo,the bottom line is how many gigahertz(that is your computer clock size, the bigger, the better)re:1000megahertz=1 gigahertz.then you wanna know how much memory,it has allot to do with speed also you proably want a dvdrom/rw and the bigger the hard drive ALWAYS the better(more storage)i just purchased a new HP and i love it so i would check them out!!! i am running 2.8ghz,2048 ram, dual dvddual scribe burners, and a 226MB gaming card.i paid $2200 just for the tower, but you can find a HP to fit all your need,i have a gateway laptop,it was very pricey but,i tend to go overboard with my credit card!always remember, whats new 2day is out dated 2morrow,how sad is that when you blow all your cash for TOP OF THE LINE and it old in a month.i hope this helps you out!!! there are a shitload of com.company's out there so take the time to look around.plus, check out tiger direct.com for good deals on new and refurbished machines with warranty's,L8R Huck,if you wanna e-mail me for more info feel free huckfoo@verizon.net
    get a dell
HP makes a good solid computer.
Are you looking for a laptop or a tower?

If you are looking for a tower, maybe you could build your own(of course with somebody else's help if you never done that before). That will probably save you a lot of money, plus you won't be paying a single cent for Windows since you would go with Linux.

EDIT: Just figured this is on desktop section lol, so never mind about the laptop thing.
If you have an interest in technology, build one yourself. It's not that hard.

Need computer purchasing advice; main uses online schooling, web, downloads, digi pics uploads, DVD burning?

I am looking to purchase a new computer to aid me in my schooling and everyday computer activities. I am going to an online university so I need something that's fast with plenty of room and memory because everything from reading assignments to actual work will be done on the computer. I also am an advid music downloader and web surfer so it needs to be able to keep up.

Will also be doing a lot of pic uploads and emailing to keep in contact with fam far away. Plus need to be able to burn data from my digi hard-drive camcorder to DVD to watch.

I think that about covers it what I mainly use a computer for. I was looking more into desktops because I really have no need for portability and I'm used to desktops. Any suggestions or recomendations of what to look for or purchase would be extremely helpful!

Get one of the new iMacs, they will do everything you want plus as a student you get a discount at the Apple store. The new iWorks software will save into files that PCs can read. The new iLife software (iDvd, iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, etc.) will cover everything else you need to do. And you get a small desktop signature, no cables all over the place, it's wifi ready so it can connect to your wireless network. And you get the added advantage of no viruses, malware, or adware.

    Thanks

My SD card won't work in my computer...advice?

I took some pictures last night with my digital camera, and today I wanted to upload them to my computer. I took the SD card out of the camera and put it in the SD drive on my laptop, like I always do, but it won't show up as being present in the computer. I usually even get a message saying ';what would you like to do with these pictures?'; with options for which programs to use. That doesn't even come up.

The SD card isn't locked, and when I remove it, I hear a ping noise from the computer, but when I reinsert it, nothing happens. What is happening and how can I fix it?My SD card won't work in my computer...advice?
First, restart the computer. Sometimes drivers get lost and need to restored during system reboot. If that doesn't fix it, try searching for the slot. Try a different SD card too. Hope this helps.

Can you help?- transferring from digital camera to computer advice!?

Hello- Hope you can help me

I need to know which cameras transfer the images onto a computer (with Vista) easily.

I have a budge of around 拢50 and seen that most makes can be bought for this budget, Fuji I have been advised are good.

But my real issue is: how easy is it to then transfer images onto your computer for say photobucket, email or gimp/photoshop?

I am wary of this as I have been using sonyericsson phones for this and my computer does not like transfering images from a sony ericsson phone. It likes Nokias but mine was stolen (I have a 拢50 voucher for argos otherwise I would just go out and buy a new phone)

Anybody have any experience with easier/harder to transfer camera makes? I am not at all very technical so this is why it needs to be dead simple!

many thanks! Can you help?- transferring from digital camera to computer advice!?
Hi yes Fuji are good, and easy I had one for my first, but I have had no problems with any, but the best bet is to get your advise from Curry's, or Dixon's, then go to Argos to buy, as I think you would not get good advice from Argos, although I may be wrong, by the way I am not to techi myself just self taught. Can you help?- transferring from digital camera to computer advice!?
Normally, if you have XP or higher, like Vista, no driver is needed to be installed on your computer. Just plug your USB cable, or the cable that came with your camera and connect your camera to your PC thru an USB slot on your computer. Then, your PC should see automatically your memory card inside your camera, like a memory stick. You cand copy, open or delete files from you camera.
    They are all the same

Plug the USB cable to your PC, open My Computer and look for the drive (probably E or F). Open that and cut/copy the photos from there and paste them where you want on your computer.

The cameras do come software but its not always necessary to install it.
Cameras usually have a usb which is used to transfer the pics to the comp. Its that easy. Once they are in the computer you can upload them to photobucket or email.
you ought not to have a problem ,

    1) fuji give a software fuji finepix viewer but you don't need to use it you can go straight to my pictures and upload

    2) the popular myth is the fuji card is not compatable , the card is a XD FUJI CARD so you use a xd card reader however you don't have to use this method to upload to your computer , so don't worry . it's a card that can be removed to carry to a card reader to read usually straight to printer .

    3) the usb plugs in and away you go , once set up there should not be a problem , it is just a matter of getting familiar with the procedure .

    4) quality of phone pic. is poor in comparison to camera .

What specs do i need for a new computer? advice plz?

i need a new computer. my current computer is on its last leg. with my new computer i need to run things like photoshop, illistrator, corawl draw, and bigger applications, things like that. im going to run a one person business form my home, so that will be my creation station as well as my personal computer for games like the sims 3 and pictures and misic. im not sure what specs i need for everything like that. i am just starting my busines so i dont have a lot of money. im thinking i need AT LEAST 2gb of ram, 250gb or hard drive, amd procceser. what else do i need? im thinking about buying a lenvo because ive heard bad things about dell and i have an hp and i hate it. apple is way to expensive. i have never bought a new computer and your help woiuld be apperciated, any serious info you can give me would be great, thanks. What specs do i need for a new computer? advice plz?
Get an apple computer ( a mac) it will run faster and it is more ';Techie';What specs do i need for a new computer? advice plz?
Could you build one? It is not hard, and you get what you want. I do rebuilds and for less than NZ$300.00 I can do a 2.4 gig CPU 2gig DDR6400 new motherboard, power supply and SATA DVD RW.

AMD CPUs handle pictures very well and 2.4-2.7 gig versions are cheap, they have good L2 cache512-1024k

Asus Motherboards are stable and reliable, with good features.

Stay away from apples they are more expensive and you lose your PC options.
You could consider this unit. $499 is not too bad. Dual core AMD 4400+ processor 2GB RAM. 250GB HDD. Windows XP Pro downgrade, if you don't like Vista Business.

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/鈥?/a>
if u can spend about 3000 dollars then get a mac pro it will let u use vista and mac at same time if u run boot camp it has 8 processers and that newest market comps only have 4 and can be upgraded to 32 gigs of ram so id get that but if u want cheaper go to best bu and put desktops then put buisness
    Mac Book Pro!!!!

I'm a graphic designer and I run all of those programs, including Other powerful media editing software. It meets up to all my needs.
Finding a computer that suits your needs isn't hard at all. You say you want to run games and photo editing applications? That pretty much sums it all up to a high end computer. I would go with a computer that has specs that have equal or greater value:

    - 4GB of Ram for quick loading

    - 500gb of Hard drive space for your pictures, music, and games

    - Nvidia Geforce 8600 or greater video card for your gaming and editing demands

    - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.3 or greater

You can find a computer like that for roughly 800, maybe 900 dollars at http://dell.com/outlet they sell refurbished computers, but they restore them to practically brand new at a price you can only beat if you build your own computer.
Ok well i would recomend SOLIDLY a sony laptop. Check out there website and they have a laptop with bluray M8400 a 3450 graphics card witch will play your games a decently large screen and 4gigs of ram to boot. It will cost you around 1300$ However if you want you can buy a desktop with better inards for a lower cost if you can sacrafice mobility. You can get a computer custom made localy with a E8400 a 9800gt a 22inch monitor and 4 gigs of DDR2 ram for less than 1000$ if you really need a preformance machine on a budget you need to go custom if you can Dell XPS or Inspiron 530 series is good.

P.S dell has really pulled there socks up.
Depends on your operating system. Either way, Vista or XP, I recommend 2gb to 4gb of RAM, a dual-core processor with cores of 2.4ghz or higher, and 250gb+ in hard disk space. If you want to game The Sims 3, I recommend a graphics card in the 9800 series from nVidia or 3800 or 4800 series from ATI.

I built a computer of this caliber recently for under $700. You can buy whole, pre-made ones from Dell, etc. for about $1200 with these specs, but all the work is done for you.

Check out http://newegg.com/ or http://dealnews.com/ for great component or full desktop prices.

your budget is not enough. but if you insist, you might want to go to a surplus shop in a third world country. they usually have those down there. they're like a junkshop for second had goods. it's really like a heaven for old junks. you can find a good working pc for less than 200$, but it is like a pc 10 years ago. so if you're using it for gaming, you might want to wait every time you turn or make a move.Building a computer need advice?
Get a skulltrail motherboard, it supports dual cpu core 2 duo quad

16 Gigs it supports Raid 10 so get 6 Terabyte drives X-fi Elite Pro

Blu-ray drive burner it supports 4 Nvidia (or Ati) GTX 280s dual sli

you can wrap it all up in a nice big antec case

  • Need to replace my 8 year old computer, advice would be nice?

hi, i have an old system which doesn't have enough RAM (128mb) its so slow, but online firm, crucial, com, said it wont take any more RAM. im a bit skint but need xp or vista for virgin broadband and would like to watch tv online which means i could sell tv to raise money (and space in flat) and get flat widescreen but what kind of computer do i need to watch tv on? i cant watch it on present computer, do i need some sort of card on intended new computer? would 256mb be much cheaper than 512mb? any advice would be appreciated.

You can buy a new computer for $230 at BestBuy (Last I was there at least) I think it had like 2GB of RAM. Forget upgrading your old comp since it can't support anymore RAM.Need to replace my 8 year old computer, advice would be nice?
I'm assuming you're in the UK (';space in flat';). I've purchased many computers for my company through Dell's online outlet store http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/produc鈥?/a> You can get a very decent machine for under $300 US.

If you buy new, don't get a computer with less than 1gb RAM, as newer operating systems don't run well with insufficient RAM..especially if you want to view streaming video online, etc. Generally, the more RAM, the better.
deskptop now days due to economic crisis around 500$ a very good one and a decent laptop around the same price most pc now have at least 1gb ram 2-4gb be nice and hardrive around 200gb+ bestbuy 4 laptop desktop i would buy from ebay a custom build if only u have xp operation system cd if not bestbuy
Time to upgrade to a newer system. For a few hundred $$$ you could get a system that is a lot better, and you could watch TV on it.
get a flame thrower and torch that!

no but seriously your best bet is to go get a cheap one at best buy. or where ever. a decent computer are relatively cheap these days.

    hope this helped
Well if you want to watch TV you need a TV-tuner card. You can customize a PC with one or install one yourself in a PCI slot.

For computers Newegg is a good one. Generally these days you can get computers with over 2GB of RAM and a dual-core for around $450.

well that looks pretty good just to play wow.....i would spend an xtra 50$ and get q6600...go with the ocz ram and the evga board........if your going with a 8600 gt ya might want to look at the 8600gts superclocked from evga.....its on newegg....160.00 after rebate and a free game......plus you can use the step up program before the end of three months and move up to a better card.....but even if ya change nothing i think you would have a good system to do what your going to do with it.......

    scott
good. but the mobo is not quite... better use asus or gigabyte mobos
I think you should change your graphic cards memory to 512mb. your other settings are good.

also change your rams to 'corsair' 800Mhz.

PLEASE help me cure my disappointment with some computer skills advice...?

I had a DVD recorded of my skydive and I thought I could capture a picture of it by printing the screen when playingiton my laptop (as I want to put it on a canvas) but it won't let me play it. I've tried taking pictures on a camera while the dvd is playing on the television but its just not the same :-( is there any way i can capture a decent picture from this dvd?PLEASE help me cure my disappointment with some computer skills advice...?
there are many software packages that have a snapshot tool when playing videos. i googled it and there are loads to choose from. i picked one below in the link.PLEASE help me cure my disappointment with some computer skills advice...?
Right, I would try to do a ';Print Screen'; while the DVD is playing in your computer.

Then, paste the image into your favourite art package for editing.

Try this program. Revo uninstaller. It is really good at removing stubborn programs. It's freeware too. click the source to download it. It works pretty good and should get rid of that program.

    New computer purchasing advice?

I'm going to buy a new Dell desktop. I would like some advice on processor, RAM, hard drive, etc. It will be used for microsoft programs, internet, pictures, video, ipod stuff, a little gaming. We would like for this to last as many years as possible for the budget. The budget is $1100. We also need a new printer with that, so $1000 for the computer %26amp; other stuff. Thanks a lot.New computer purchasing advice?
i just got my dell vostro 1500 for $1034 last week. pretty sweet deal. the inspiron family is pretty much same deal. mine's intel core 2 duo T5470, 2 GB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT video card, integrated webcam, DVD burner, 120 GB harddrive and 1680x1050 res monitor.

if you want a printer and some accessories with that you can get the default 1280x800 res monitor instead. that's $100 cheaper. you might also want to consider using geforce 8400M GS witch is $50 cheaper, or intel GMA, which sucks a lot almost impossible to play games. but that's $150 cheaper. you can also consider sacrifice webcam or DVD burner. but you MUST get intel core 2 duo, which is every power efficient and generates less heat, and 2 GB of RAM. windows vista would definitely need 2 GB of RAM.New computer purchasing advice?
Do you want to build it your self or going store bot,
The Dell XPS 410 is a great model. I bought it because it had great reviews, and I've been very pleased.
Well, you could try for some of the dell xps systems they are for media and gaming but for your budget i think the XPS systems might be good for you, just that when you customize your system, make sure it's in your budget and dont get integrated graphic cards because they are not made for gaming. For a processor i would suggest a duel core, they are faster than single cores and RAM at least 1GB because the more RAM you have the faster your computer will run, and the hard rive maybe around 80-120GB but it depends how much stuff you want to put on it.
    http://www.dell.com/content/products/pro鈥?/a>

inspiron 531 for $619 is in your budget and would work well for your intended uses
Go for as much RAM as possible. If you can't afford it now, look into it later. Vista is a resource hog - plain and simple. The more RAM you have the better it will run. I'm not familiar with exactly what model number you want, but 3 gigabytes of RAM should help you nicely.
I would get the core 2 duo processor and at least 2 or 3 gig of ram and probably like 1 500gb hard drive if u have a lot of music but like a 250 works for me

I had a virus on my computer and only way out was to use system restore . I had Norton on it and as I was going to change it removed programme as restore wouldn't work with it on . After restore Norton back on have tried to remove again as Kapersky wont load with norton but when i try to remove it says the specified module could not be found ?What does this mean and what do I have to do . Cant actually get Norton to open either but windows tells me I am protected by norton . Hope someone can help a dumb damsell in distress thanks Please could someone give me some computer advice please got myself in a right mess ?
Norton is a really crap anti-virus and it dosn't uninstall properly.

You need to download and run the Norton removal tool from symantec - http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsg鈥?/a>

After you run this file Kaspersky should install perfectly.

Stick with Kaspersky from now on :-)Please could someone give me some computer advice please got myself in a right mess ?
Calm down really its not you its norton. Its plagued with problems regarding software. Your best bet is to uninstall and use something free. Norton has really hit the rocks and its not good.

Go to my page here and click program reviews. There is a link down at the bottom for the norton uninstall. YOU MUST use this otherwise it wont ever leave you system

    http://www.freewebs.com/revollie/

Then go to the page lalabeled CCLeaner. Download that and then do the scan and the registry repair AFTER you have uninstalled norton. This will get rid of anything else. Also i would advise running CCleaner once a month to keep your system clean.

Then looking at program reviews again use the download links to download a program you think you will benefit from and keep safe. However i think you have made the right choice going with kaspersky.

Email me if you ever need more help regarding this and don't forget to sign the guest book :P

Sorry to be dumb *** computer advice please?

this might sound real lame so i apologies now!!

OK when i click on the windows icon, and in the start search box i type a certain name of a program i have downloaded and nothing is found with that name does that mean that the program has been deleted from my computer and all the files associated with it ??

Also i would like to know if when you download a movie off a file sharing site or illegal site does that download go into a file with the websites name on it IE: lime wire meaning that everything downloaded from that website is all gathered in a file called lime wire?? or do they go off into other places?? I hope that makes sense am a numpty when it comes to computers thanks guysSorry to be dumb *** computer advice please?
If search does not find it, it is possible that it is not indexed and therefore the computer doesn't know where the file is right off hand. That's why in order to be proficient at computers, you must know where you are saving things. This is why folders, and folder names are useful tools. Make a folder called ';Downloads'; and anything you download, put in that folder. Makes sense, right?

As for the second question, things that are downloaded, say just from websites are usually put in a temporary folder that is hidden from users - only windows knows where it's at. This is because it's temporary and will be deleted later. If you need to keep track of something, put it in your ';Downloads'; folder.

Same thing with Limewire. Limewire has a directory that it knows as its ';Save Directory';. This is the folder somewhere on your computer where it dumps all the things downloaded. You can change this folder in the Edit %26gt; Preferences (or Options) menu.

...And no, downloaded files don't have the URL associated with the filename.

A little bit of mac/computer advice please?

Hey i am really thinking about getting a mac, and i need some thoughts on it.

I can get either an iMac or a macbook to replace my current desktop and im unsure on which.

I am leaning towards getting a macbook because i have already just recently bought a HD 24'; (DVI compatible) LCD screen, and buying an iMac would send that to waste.

Do you think that it would be practical to hook up my macbook to it using the correct cables etc to my screen, alongside a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

what i am really asking is, is it really fiddly and time consuming to hook a macbook up to a screen and then take it away again, back and forth?A little bit of mac/computer advice please?
Well if you're feeling sinister, go off and see a minister, but for macs...

My idea on macs is, if you really like need a laptop, get a laptop.

I do graphics and like the fullscreen and have network and peripherals and whatnot, so I dont like laptops. Also, I dont like carrying around something as fragile as a computer... plus, do I want to carry around $1000-$2000 in cash all the time? I equate that to laptop.

So I use a desktop. Im planning on travelling the world in a few years and would get a laptop just for that.

So, like I said I use a desktop. Inevitably, every 4 or so years, you are going to have to upgrade. The way I figure that is, if I have something with a screen (laptops included) I am repurchasing the screen. What I mean is, with an imac, you aren't just getting a CPU, you are getting a screen and paying for that.

When I upgrade, I also dont upgrade keyboards or mice when I get a new computer. Laptops, you buy the keyboard again, so to speak...

If I have something I have to plug up, even a powercord, it's a pain, so maybe Im critical. If I had a laptop, I'd have to plug up my speakers, my rollball mouse, my external hard drive and my modem... Screw that.

I have been using a macmini for about 4 years, and had a g3 tower before that. When I upgraded to the mini, I paid $500 for a totally new computer. I upgraded my monitor last year, but that was on my own terms and there was nothing wrong with my previous monitor, so I look at it as a luxury purchase...

I am about to upgrade coincidentally next week to a dual G5 tower for $700 with a 160 GB hard drive and 3G of RAM. I dont have to sweat anything but the computer part. I can probably sell my mac-mini for $200 too, so Im spending about $500 every 5 years, which to me isn't bad.

I don't get off on having the newest of the new, so I might not be the best to ask.

If you dont use heavy graphics, my advice would be a mac mini. I upgraded mine to 512 and works well with 15 MB photoshop files. Having a few programs up at the same time can slow it down.A little bit of mac/computer advice please?
Not really, it's just one more cable to unplug along with the power cord, mouse and Ethernet. I'd only be concerned about overworking the video connector, especially if you did it daily.

The iMac does support using a second monitor as an extended desktop by the way.
it takes all of 3 seconds to hook it up and then another 10 to get the computer configured for 2 monitors.

very easy , i suggest you do it , newer macs come with dvi out ports
    Get a PC
it only takes the connection from the new monitor and a

adapter cable that you can buy.

So there will be an adapter plugged into your mac that plugs into the monitor....

I dont know what its called so ask at a computer electronics store.
i dont think the macbook has the correct plug input for a standard screen. u can buy an adapter though. but once you have a macbook, i know you wont need or want the monitor. its an amazing portable laptop. you can sit in bed and surf the web (thats what i do.) just keep in mind that a newer version is bound to come out in june.
    AAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!

Go to your doc and get checked out!! LOL nah only kidding.

Why would you want to get a mac? A PC with XP is the more widely supported os even though I hate microsoft even more than apple.

Stick with a PC with microsoft in even though they are money grabbing *********! They do have a good reliable(ish) os that does what its supposed to do as long as the software you are using is well made.

Can you buy a decent computer at wal-mart? Computer advice?

Can you buy a decent computer at wal-mart? our wal-mart doesn't have the greatest selection, but i could get one online and have it shipped to our store.. I don't know a whole lot about computers and ive never bought one before just used alot of pass down ones. . I want one that will play at least Sims 2 well (my current one wont) which I'm sure isn't that hard to come by now, heres a link to the Minimum System Requirements for Sims 2, http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?h…

Could someone maybe recommend one off the wal-mart website? or help give me an idea what to look for? i mean i know how to check the requirements and stuff, but i don't know like, is one brand better than others? Does it matter if its a intel or amd processor? or stuff like that. How much should i expect to spend? Would it be better to goto Best Buy? We don't have one locally but theres one 2 hours away. Or maybe another website? My boyfriend wants to build one, off tigerdirect. but i dunno about that, he knows alot more about computers than i do, but i have a feeling it would be a long drawn out process and take forever. Oh and i dont need a monitor or speakers and stuff, we just got new speakers, and i'd rather pick out a keyboard at the store so i can play with them first :P

I was kinda thinking about this one.. but i dunno, i dont think it says what kind of video it has. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d…

Is that one a good deal? or is there a better one?Can you buy a decent computer at wal-mart? Computer advice?
The only problem with this PC is that the video card is integrated on the motherboard, %26amp; may not be powerful enough for gaming at a satisfactory level of quality.

On top of that there are no free expansion slots should you ever want to install a better video card to replace that one. This PC should definitely be avoided for that reason alone.

I strongly suggest you go with Intel an Core2Duo for gaming. Even AMD fans like myself have to admit that they are better performers for gamers %26amp; power users.

Best Buy is an excellent place to buy a PC. They have great choices, %26amp; if you look for specials you can't go wrong. I know you already have a monitor, but look at this one just as an example. It has an incredibly powerful CPU (Quad Core 6600) with 4GB of ram %26amp; free expansion slots to upgrade the video card and add other devices in the future. It also comes with a 21.6” Widescreen LCD Monitor which you can sell if you don't need.

    All that for $699.99 :

    http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail…

It might also be a good idea to wait a few weeks because places like Best Buy are sure to offer incredible deals during their Xmas sale.

    regards,

Philip TCan you buy a decent computer at wal-mart? Computer advice?
You would get a good computer from Wal-Mart, but I would shop around to find a better deal. Their computers are kind of expensive and you could get something better for a better price.
That computer is a rip off. You get the best deal if you custom build your own from a site such as http://www.newegg.com/

You can also buy pre built systems from newegg.
check with circuit city or office max. Holiday deals are out but watch you self.look for upgradable products are best.

Firstly, antivirus programs will NOT remove these as they are malicious codecs, although they may find reference to them and remove it but upon rebooting it's back again.

Therefore you need to use a 'layered' approach to removing this parasite which has been successful in hundreds of cases

    RogueRemover:

    http://www.download.com/RogueRemover/300鈥?/a>

Download, install, update, scan and follow on screen prompts.

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Ant鈥?/a>

Download, install, update and select Full Scan.

Remove all infections that it finds after scan.

    Remove Restrictions Tool:

    http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/RR鈥?/a>

Download from Softpedia Secure Download (RO), install, run and check all boxes then click Apply and then reboot. This tool re-enables what codecs/viruses have disabled.

    Spybot S%26amp;D:

    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/downl鈥?/a>

Download, install, update and Immunize, turn off Tea Timer then click 'Check for problems' then when complete select all and then 'Fix Checked'

Spyware Doctor Free Basic Edition - Realtime monitoring:

    http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_inst鈥?/a>

Its free with Google pack, untick all boxes except Spyware Doctor. Download install, update and run.

    VundoFix:

    http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/gl鈥?/a>

Disconnect your computer from the internet

    Run vundo

    Restart your computer

Run the tool again to ensure no traces are left.

If there are the reboot into Safe Mode and run FixVundo again.

If your desktop has changed or icons are missing also use:

    Wallpaper Hijacker Removal Tool:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Wallpaper_Hija鈥?/a>

Note: You should hit all ';Repair'; buttons even though it may not say ';Found!'; This will fix a wallpaper hijack everytime if all repair buttons are pressed.

If the problem persists, turn OFF System Restore, Right click My computer %26gt; select Properties %26gt; System Restore Tab %26gt; Tick Turn Off System restore on all drives and scan with the above programs in Safe Mode - tap F8 during boot before Windows splash screen and select Safe Mode.

After scans are complete and machine is clean remember to turn system restore back ON and create a new restore point.

Help someone that has professional computer advice.......?
i guess you're using windows internet explorer, and possibly running it in no add ons mode. I don't know

i advise checking the shortcut where you run IE, it may say no add ons at the end

Otherwise download mozilla firefox from www.mozilla.com, its another browser, simple to use and reliable
your pc is infected with virus and spyware. use internet explorer and visit this website. accept the term and next. follow 1 or 2 simple steps to start online scanning. this is nod32 online scanner. top level antivirus like avg, norton. anyway, scan your pc and clean virus.

    http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

if u like this antivirus, better purchase. it is best coz it wont slow ur pc down like avg, norton, avira, avast
Sounds like you're infected bad...plus your browser's been hijacked. Spyware Doctor might solve your problem.

Here's the link http://pack.google.com/intl/en/installer鈥?/a> Run an Intelli-Scan first and see if it detects everything, then run a full scan.

    GOod luck
For the pop ups go here http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger鈥?/a> You can run it from where it is or save it.

Try reinstalling the flash player after you have carried out a virus scan.

Try here for an online scan www.housecall.trendmicro.com
Avast Antivirus ( www.avast.com ) - it has a boot time scanner. Update then do a - Full Scan. Do a boot time scan in safe mode. Reason... Many stubborn trojans and viruses can only be remove with a boot time scan. Good Luck.

when was the last time you UPDATED your anti-virus...?

You have to update or it won't detect new malware, etc

If you want some good hacking software DL and burn a Knoppix Live Cd. It is an open source (free) Operating System. Hacking from inside a MS OS is a waste of Time and Energy...Good Luck and enjoy...
Internet Explorer 8 works fine for me. Opera would be the best choice for hackers since you can import cookies and use them.
In my opinion it doesn't really matter what OS you are using. i prefer Mozilla though cos u really dun get that much of pop-ups and is faster than Internet Explorer.

    Computer mouse advice?

I am getting a new mouse for my computer, i have been looking at the the trackball optical mice ( not the old style ones, the ones with the big ball sitting ontop that you rotate around ) like logitech trackmans. Anyone know if they are any good? compared to the standard mice? advise please? Im not a gamer by the way.Computer mouse advice?
Well imo if u have used a regular mouse it will take some time to get used to this type of mouse i used it a few times and tossed it couldnt get used to it.Computer mouse advice?
If you're accustomed to trackballs already, you can checkout Logitech.com for them. I haven't used any trackballs as they are horrendous for gaming and photoshop, but my experience with Logitech mice has been flawless (currently using a Logitech G5).

I always viewed trackballs as a more ';space-conserving'; type of mouse as you don't need a mousepad to wave it around on.

OK, I really need some computer advice?

OK, I have a lot of questions about upgrading my computer. It's an old Compaq Presario SR1103WM. The only upgrade I've done is adding 512 MB of RAM. This summer I was going to upgrade the RAM again, get a new P4 processor, and a new PCI graphics card to play games that are a few years old. I know about the RAM and the new processor. My questions are:

Will my motherboard handle all of this?

Someone told me my motherboard couldn't handle newer graphics cards, what kind will it take?

Will I need a new power supply for all of this?

    Basically that's about it.

Here's the link to the specs:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c00191902%26amp;cc=us%26amp;dlc=en%26amp;lc=en%26amp;jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

And here's the link to the motherboard specs:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en%26amp;cc=us%26amp;dlc=en%26amp;docname=c00063244#c00063244_docOK, I really need some computer advice?
If you're gonna spend any more money upgrading that piece of crap, then you're crazy. PC's are disposable nowadays. It will only be as fast as it's weakest link, which would be the motherboard. My advice is to buy a used Intel Mac on ebay, buy Bootcamp if you really need to run Windows, and be worry free for the next few years like me.OK, I really need some computer advice?
because a lot of stores order their computers differently you will need to look up the model number for the power supply and calculate the new graphics card but i doubt you will need a new power supply if it is a recent computer.and the mother board can only handle so much RAM
It's to old your better off building a new PC it should not cost much. Just think about it here is a good link http://www.newegg.com they have everything.
Your MOBO will NOT accept PCI-E, only PCI, which is very old and obsolete in terms of graphics.
Suggest you research and record what you need to bring your PC up to date and cost.

You may not find it cost-effective as I was told when I wanted to upgrade my Pentium III.

By closely watching weekend ads in our newspaper, where Office Max, Office Depot, Best Buy, Circuit City, are all competing with weekend specials, I picked up a new Pentium IV for $299. Stores usually have a limited supply on hand so you have to get there early.

Another thought is to check out Dell and HP for refurbished. They usually come with full warranty and if you are lucky enough to catch one, you can get a really good deal. Again, they go quickly so you have to keep checking in.

    CPU and basic Computer Advice?

The part that makes it hard to choose, is that i also would like to play games on it such as GTA San Andreas.

I dont know if its just me, but i think the computers with the GOOD graphics card (512mb dedicated) would be more expensive than to just buy a computer with a bad graphics card then upgrade it afterwards.

I know ram should be at least 3mb, harddrive should be at least 250gb, but i am not sure about the CPU specs.

How much should i be looking to spend for just the tower?

here is one list of computers i am looking at:

    http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/subclass.asp?catid=10607%26amp;mfr=%26amp;logon=%26amp;langid=EN%26amp;sort=3%26amp;page=0%26amp;list=

    CPU and basic Computer Advice?
Well GTA San Andreas isnt a demanding game so you wouldnt need a great graphics card. Usually, you can find graphics cards for cheaper. A 3.0Ghz dual core CPU would be good, not to mention relatively cheap. I say spend about $400-$600 for the tower alone.CPU and basic Computer Advice?
GTA San Andreas doesn't really need a very good graphic card, a mid-class one will do the work.

2GB RAM is enough, but if you prefer 3GB, that's better.

Dual Core CPU will satisfy your needs. (either Intel or AMD)

to look for cheap but good laptops use ebay and ebay express.

the best models taht are really cheap (around $600-700)from my experience/info are:

    hp

    toshiba

    acer

If u find an IBM laptop for a cheap price you'll be going at a great deal..I am looking for a laptop computer for college does anyone have any advice on where to find one?
If price is the main issue then I recommend getting a dell. The new dell inspirons should do the job for you. Right now you can get a pretty good deal on them and for $1290 or so you can get.

    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz 4mb FSB

    2GB RAM

    160GB HDD

    Nvidia 8600m GT 256mb GPU

    Bluetooth/Wifi AG

    2MP Webcam and Microphone

    CD/DVD Burner

This is the best machine in terms of performance to price in my opinion. So it should be great for almost any sort of college work and even intensive gaming.
Have to give a budget figure. Cheap means different things. The Dell would be a good choice. the E1520 with a core 2 duo goes for around a $1000 and the E 1501 with a turion X 2 for under 700 would be two good choices. Also shop at Best Buy and circuit City, HP and Toshiba are good brands often on sale and you can get a feel for what you like.

Most important is the CPU. You will need about 2GBs of RAM for Vista. If you play games you will need a dedicated graphic card.
Well you need to post what specs you need in a computer for the college, some require higher graphics then others. New cheap laptop watch http://bensbargains.net/index.php there are decent deals at least weekly if not monthly. For a used laptop, only if you are good with them, checkout ebay. Personally I would say go with one with upgradable graphics, just incase you need to up the graphics. Ram is really cheap for the newer notebooks and to keep the system running well I would say to get a cooling pad for the notebook, www.nexfan.com has some at decent prices. I hope something in this ramble helps.
