i just got my dell vostro 1500 for $1034 last week. pretty sweet deal. the inspiron family is pretty much same deal. mine's intel core 2 duo T5470, 2 GB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT video card, integrated webcam, DVD burner, 120 GB harddrive and 1680x1050 res monitor.
if you want a printer and some accessories with that you can get the default 1280x800 res monitor instead. that's $100 cheaper. you might also want to consider using geforce 8400M GS witch is $50 cheaper, or intel GMA, which sucks a lot almost impossible to play games. but that's $150 cheaper. you can also consider sacrifice webcam or DVD burner. but you MUST get intel core 2 duo, which is every power efficient and generates less heat, and 2 GB of RAM. windows vista would definitely need 2 GB of RAM.New computer purchasing advice?
Do you want to build it your self or going store bot,
The Dell XPS 410 is a great model. I bought it because it had great reviews, and I've been very pleased.
Well, you could try for some of the dell xps systems they are for media and gaming but for your budget i think the XPS systems might be good for you, just that when you customize your system, make sure it's in your budget and dont get integrated graphic cards because they are not made for gaming. For a processor i would suggest a duel core, they are faster than single cores and RAM at least 1GB because the more RAM you have the faster your computer will run, and the hard rive maybe around 80-120GB but it depends how much stuff you want to put on it.

inspiron 531 for $619 is in your budget and would work well for your intended uses
Go for as much RAM as possible. If you can't afford it now, look into it later. Vista is a resource hog - plain and simple. The more RAM you have the better it will run. I'm not familiar with exactly what model number you want, but 3 gigabytes of RAM should help you nicely.
I would get the core 2 duo processor and at least 2 or 3 gig of ram and probably like 1 500gb hard drive if u have a lot of music but like a 250 works for me
