I know this is a LOOONG shot, but my daughter managed to reach our laptop from its spot on the desk and she dropped it. Everything works fine as far as it starting up, but the screen doesn't work now. It is black or, at times, white. I was wondering if there is any way to connect a computer screen to a laptop, or whether anyone had any general advice or ideas as to how to fix it? well, first see if the laptop is under warranty beacuse if it is they will probably replace it. Next take a lam,p and hold it up to the screen and look closely, if you see anything then it is just the backlight or a loose clip. Also, if it does boot up try placing a vga cord to it then using the function keys to swich to the mkonitor. if that dosent work then the laptop is pronbably shot. also, your hard drive might be broken,they are relativly fragileAdvice on broken computer--daughter dropped it?
It sounds like the connection to the screen may have came loose (its just a little cord, its happens a lot too). Its a simple fix warrantyour computer is still under any kind of warranty opening the case would void it.
In the case of conneccting the Laptop to a new monotor, there is a cable you can use, if you go to like best buy just tell them what you are trying to do.
Yes you can connect to a external screen/monitor but you would need the lap top screen to do it. Take it to a computer repair store like Frys Electronics (http://www.frys.com) or the one I use (Quality High Tec Services (http://www.QHT.com).

it is possible if your laptop has another vga port on the side or and the back. What to do is buy a monitor and hook it to your laptop via VGA cable(normally blue) and boot your thing and press FN+F2 i think? or check your keyboard and look for a little square icon in the F rows
More than likely the LCD screen needs to be replaced.You CAN hook up an external monitor to your laptop.Plug the monitor into the vga connector plug and reboot.

Advice,computer smart-guys?
I posted a question yesterday and a smart-@ss replied that I ';shouldn't be surfing the internet if I didn't know how to maintain my computer';...well...duh,sorry I don't know what to do...I'd like to know!! What exactly is it that I should be doing to properly take care of my computer? These are the only things I use it for: Email,yahoo messenger,read on-line newspapers,Myspace,post frequently on a pregnancy message board,and look up random things for informational purposes. What should I be doing exactly and when for maintenance?

- do a virus scan and spyware scan every week or two to prevent anything bad from happening. If you know you haven't been on any virus-lurking websites, maybe you can do one every 3 weeks.
- Update windows every two months. This will help you keep your Windows new and makes it stronger against any nasties on the web.
- Update your anti-virus program and anti-spyware program often. This will help it track down more viruses in your computer.
- Defragment your computer every month or so to speed it up slightly.
- Clean out any useless files (Temporary internet files, history etc.) to speed up your computer and prevent any errors.

The first place I check when my computer starts to run slower is the registry. Yes, the registry. Most people don’t even know what, or where the registry is, and especially don’t understand how this can slow a computer down. Let me explain.
Basically, the registry files contain information and settings for all of the software, hardware, operating system software, and anything else running on your computer. Mess any of these files up, and the computer does not know how to function. The computer goes to start up the software, looks for the registry files, and either can not find it or finds something that does not look like it is suppose to look like. It then just sits there: it does not know what to do next. This is where the “hanging” or “locking up” of your computer comes from. These files will need to be fixed.
To fix the registry files, find a good quality registry repair software called registry cleaner and run it on your computer.Top 5 registry cleaners can be found in here:

It sounds like you're looking for a budget build. You don't need the latest quad core CPU, a fancy graphics card, or a blu-ray drive. You should be looking at computers no more expensive than $500 to suit your needs.
I would recommend looking for a system with an Intel CPU from the E5000 series (E5200, for example). This is a low cost CPU that performs well and will do everything you need it to. You'll probably want to avoid quad core CPUs as they are more expensive and unnecessary for your needs.
System RAM (memory) should be in the 2-4GB range. No less than 2, no more than 4.
Integrated graphics, also known as IGP. You don't need anything special to play bejeweled and the computer will be cheaper if the graphics processor is built into the motherboard rather than a discrete graphics card. Most low cost computers will have integrated graphics anyway.

I have a toshiba infinia 7130 and it is like 5 7 yrs old. But it worked great. However, I was in the middle of a game and it crashed. I re-started the computer and received the following screen:

I hit start windows normally and it continued, but a quick blue screen with error messages flashed, and it rebooted. It continues to do the same thing. It won't do safe mode. I unpluged everything, put another hard drive in, and went into CMOS setup. (hitting delete to enter setup key when starting computer)

It sounds like you have a serious software corruption or a hardware failure. You put another hard drive in, did you install an operating system (Windows, Linux) on that hard drive? If you didn't your computer won't boot because there is no OS. Do you have the Windows installation disk? Try doing a recovery on the original hard disk from that if you do.
Failing that you could try a Linux LiveCD to start your PC and try to fix the hard disk errors.I am having problems with my computer booting up. Any advice?

If it is not a software problem, I would guess that there may be a problem with the motherboard.
What message does it give you when you attempt safe mode? That will help to give a proper diagnosis. Most of the time when this happens it is a problem with a file in the XP operating system getting corrupted. You can use an XP boot disk to get to a command prompt, and attempt a 'chkdsk /f', or you can use the same disk to repair a corrupted windows installation.

I'm a songwriter and musician and want to start putting my songs down on multitrack but using a computer.
Someone has suggested Cubase or Reason.
My main question is - how do I record singing as there is only a little mini jack and my microphones have 1/4 inch jacks on them.
Also, I'm a bit of a technophobe so it has to be a really simple programme. To start off I'm only gonna need about 8 tracks. I'm used to analogue recording with reel to reel and old fashioned stuff.
Are there any groups out there where you can learn step by step how to start hard disk/computer recording????

Maybe the Card and the phones are working on the same channel, and they have the same Hertz, (Frequency), they may be interfering

basically the file is in use so nortons cannot repair it. So what you do is boot in safe mode where only a small amount of the operating system is used, allowing nortons to repair it
you could boot in safe mode then run your nortons or do what I paste below.

Advice in buying a new computer?
I am a 16 year old with an interest in technology. I have a decent job and have a respectable amount of spending money, but I would rather not spend more than 1000 dollars. I want to buy a computer that will not completely suck with in two years. I don't need a fancy graphic card or anything, just a computer that I can run a lot of things at one time and store a lot of music and such. Also I am considering switching to Linux so if you have any suggestions about that id appriciate it.Advice in buying a new computer?
Good idea. You have a lot of good choices. Remember, 2 GB of RAM is crucial to multitasking. If you ever edit movies or Photoshop, make sure you have a good CPU as well.
First of all, 1000 bucks is what is referred to as the ';Budget PC.';
Here are a few recommendations for your PC, whether you're building it yourself or looking for a prebuilt PC.
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo e6300 or 4300
RAM - 2GB RAM (look on newegg.com if you want help with this)
Motherboard: This one looks good:

As for whether to switch to Linux, well, Ubuntu and Gentoo are considered fast Linux OSs. They're lighter than Windows, but can't game or use exclusive Windows applications such as Adobe Photoshop. Otherwise for ordinary chatting, surfing, and document editing, Linux is fine, free, and fast.
For the ';completely suck'; problem, i.e. the obsolete technology problem, well, PCs generally get 2x as fast every 2 years or so. Basically you might want to learn how to overclock to speed up your PC or get a new one in a few years.

For music, well, a 120 GB hard drive is pretty good. If you want to backup DVDs, a much larger (400+ GB) hard drive is recommended. Getting 2 hard drives is not a bad idea. Use 1 for ordinary PC use, and the other for storage. Also, get a Western Digital Caviar or Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 drive for fast speed at a bargain price. I no sooner did that and they are talking about a quad processor and a terabyte memory. You cant win it seems.. With 1000 dollars you should be able to get a very powerful computer today.

Need computer purchasing advice; main uses online schooling, web, downloads, digi pics uploads, DVD burning?
I am looking to purchase a new computer to aid me in my schooling and everyday computer activities. I am going to an online university so I need something that's fast with plenty of room and memory because everything from reading assignments to actual work will be done on the computer. I also am an advid music downloader and web surfer so it needs to be able to keep up.
Will also be doing a lot of pic uploads and emailing to keep in contact with fam far away. Plus need to be able to burn data from my digi hard-drive camcorder to DVD to watch.
I think that about covers it what I mainly use a computer for. I was looking more into desktops because I really have no need for portability and I'm used to desktops. Any suggestions or recomendations of what to look for or purchase would be extremely helpful!

I'm a songwriter and musician and want to start putting my songs down on multitrack but using a computer.
Someone has suggested Cubase or Reason.
My main question is - how do I record singing as there is only a little mini jack and my microphones have 1/4 inch jacks on them.
Also, I'm a bit of a technophobe so it has to be a really simple programme. To start off I'm only gonna need about 8 tracks. I'm used to analogue recording with reel to reel and old fashioned stuff.
Are there any groups out there where you can learn step by step how to start hard disk/computer recording????

My SD card won't work in my computer...advice?
I took some pictures last night with my digital camera, and today I wanted to upload them to my computer. I took the SD card out of the camera and put it in the SD drive on my laptop, like I always do, but it won't show up as being present in the computer. I usually even get a message saying ';what would you like to do with these pictures?'; with options for which programs to use. That doesn't even come up.
The SD card isn't locked, and when I remove it, I hear a ping noise from the computer, but when I reinsert it, nothing happens. What is happening and how can I fix it?My SD card won't work in my computer...advice?

I need to know which cameras transfer the images onto a computer (with Vista) easily.
I have a budge of around 拢50 and seen that most makes can be bought for this budget, Fuji I have been advised are good.
But my real issue is: how easy is it to then transfer images onto your computer for say photobucket, email or gimp/photoshop?
I am wary of this as I have been using sonyericsson phones for this and my computer does not like transfering images from a sony ericsson phone. It likes Nokias but mine was stolen (I have a 拢50 voucher for argos otherwise I would just go out and buy a new phone)
Anybody have any experience with easier/harder to transfer camera makes? I am not at all very technical so this is why it needs to be dead simple!

Hi yes Fuji are good, and easy I had one for my first, but I have had no problems with any, but the best bet is to get your advise from Curry's, or Dixon's, then go to Argos to buy, as I think you would not get good advice from Argos, although I may be wrong, by the way I am not to techi myself just self taught.Can you help?- transferring from digital camera to computer advice!?
Normally, if you have XP or higher, like Vista, no driver is needed to be installed on your computer. Just plug your USB cable, or the cable that came with your camera and connect your camera to your PC thru an USB slot on your computer. Then, your PC should see automatically your memory card inside your camera, like a memory stick. You cand copy, open or delete files from you camera.
They are all the same
Plug the USB cable to your PC, open My Computer and look for the drive (probably E or F). Open that and cut/copy the photos from there and paste them where you want on your computer.
The cameras do come software but its not always necessary to install it.
Cameras usually have a usb which is used to transfer the pics to the comp. Its that easy. Once they are in the computer you can upload them to photobucket or email.
you ought not to have a problem ,
1) fuji give a software fuji finepix viewer but you don't need to use it you can go straight to my pictures and upload
2) the popular myth is the fuji card is not compatable , the card is a XD FUJI CARD so you use a xd card reader however you don't have to use this method to upload to your computer , so don't worry . it's a card that can be removed to carry to a card reader to read usually straight to printer .
3) the usb plugs in and away you go , once set up there should not be a problem , it is just a matter of getting familiar with the procedure .
4) quality of phone pic. is poor in comparison to camera .
I need to know which cameras transfer the images onto a computer (with Vista) easily.
I have a budge of around 拢50 and seen that most makes can be bought for this budget, Fuji I have been advised are good.
But my real issue is: how easy is it to then transfer images onto your computer for say photobucket, email or gimp/photoshop?
I am wary of this as I have been using sonyericsson phones for this and my computer does not like transfering images from a sony ericsson phone. It likes Nokias but mine was stolen (I have a 拢50 voucher for argos otherwise I would just go out and buy a new phone)
Anybody have any experience with easier/harder to transfer camera makes? I am not at all very technical so this is why it needs to be dead simple!

Hi yes Fuji are good, and easy I had one for my first, but I have had no problems with any, but the best bet is to get your advise from Curry's, or Dixon's, then go to Argos to buy, as I think you would not get good advice from Argos, although I may be wrong, by the way I am not to techi myself just self taught.Can you help?- transferring from digital camera to computer advice!?
Normally, if you have XP or higher, like Vista, no driver is needed to be installed on your computer. Just plug your USB cable, or the cable that came with your camera and connect your camera to your PC thru an USB slot on your computer. Then, your PC should see automatically your memory card inside your camera, like a memory stick. You cand copy, open or delete files from you camera.
They are all the same
Plug the USB cable to your PC, open My Computer and look for the drive (probably E or F). Open that and cut/copy the photos from there and paste them where you want on your computer.
The cameras do come software but its not always necessary to install it.
Cameras usually have a usb which is used to transfer the pics to the comp. Its that easy. Once they are in the computer you can upload them to photobucket or email.
you ought not to have a problem ,
1) fuji give a software fuji finepix viewer but you don't need to use it you can go straight to my pictures and upload
2) the popular myth is the fuji card is not compatable , the card is a XD FUJI CARD so you use a xd card reader however you don't have to use this method to upload to your computer , so don't worry . it's a card that can be removed to carry to a card reader to read usually straight to printer .
3) the usb plugs in and away you go , once set up there should not be a problem , it is just a matter of getting familiar with the procedure .
4) quality of phone pic. is poor in comparison to camera .

You can get a computer custom made localy with a E8400 a 9800gt a 22inch monitor and 4 gigs of DDR2 ram for less than 1000$ if you really need a preformance machine on a budget you need to go custom if you can Dell XPS or Inspiron 530 series is good.

well that looks pretty good just to play wow.....i would spend an xtra 50$ and get q6600...go with the ocz ram and the evga board........if your going with a 8600 gt ya might want to look at the 8600gts superclocked from evga.....its on newegg....160.00 after rebate and a free game......plus you can use the step up program before the end of three months and move up to a better card.....but even if ya change nothing i think you would have a good system to do what your going to do with it.......

I think you should change your graphic cards memory to 512mb. your other settings are good.
also change your rams to 'corsair' 800Mhz.

if you want a printer and some accessories with that you can get the default 1280x800 res monitor instead. that's $100 cheaper. you might also want to consider using geforce 8400M GS witch is $50 cheaper, or intel GMA, which sucks a lot almost impossible to play games. but that's $150 cheaper. you can also consider sacrifice webcam or DVD burner. but you MUST get intel core 2 duo, which is every power efficient and generates less heat, and 2 GB of RAM. windows vista would definitely need 2 GB of RAM.New computer purchasing advice?

I had a virus on my computer and only way out was to use system restore . I had Norton on it and as I was going to change it removed programme as restore wouldn't work with it on . After restore Norton back on have tried to remove again as Kapersky wont load with norton but when i try to remove it says the specified module could not be found ?What does this mean and what do I have to do . Cant actually get Norton to open either but windows tells me I am protected by norton . Hey i am really thinking about getting a mac, and i need some thoughts on it.
I can get either an iMac or a macbook to replace my current desktop and im unsure on which.
I am leaning towards getting a macbook because i have already just recently bought a HD 24'; (DVI compatible) LCD screen, and buying an iMac would send that to waste.
Do you think that it would be practical to hook up my macbook to it using the correct cables etc to my screen, alongside a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
what i am really asking is, is it really fiddly and time consuming to hook a macbook up to a screen and then take it away again, back and forth?A little bit of mac/computer advice please?

So I use a desktop. Im planning on travelling the world in a few years and would get a laptop just for that.

I am about to upgrade coincidentally next week to a dual G5 tower for $700 with a 160 GB hard drive and 3G of RAM. I dont have to sweat anything but the computer part. I can probably sell my mac-mini for $200 too, so Im spending about $500 every 5 years, which to me isn't bad.
I don't get off on having the newest of the new, so I might not be the best to ask.
If you dont use heavy graphics, my advice would be a mac mini. I upgraded mine to 512 and works well with 15 MB photoshop files. Having a few programs up at the same time can slow it down.A little bit of mac/computer advice please?
Not really, it's just one more cable to unplug along with the power cord, mouse and Ethernet. I'd only be concerned about overworking the video connector, especially if you did it daily.
The iMac does support using a second monitor as an extended desktop by the way.
it takes all of 3 seconds to hook it up and then another 10 to get the computer configured for 2 monitors.

it only takes the connection from the new monitor and a

So there will be an adapter plugged into your mac that plugs into the monitor....

i dont think the macbook has the correct plug input for a standard screen. u can buy an adapter though. but once you have a macbook, i know you wont need or want the monitor. its an amazing portable laptop. you can sit in bed and surf the web (thats what i do.) just keep in mind that a newer version is bound to come out in june.

Can you buy a decent computer at wal-mart? our wal-mart doesn't have the greatest selection, but i could get one online and have it shipped to our store.. I don't know a whole lot about computers and ive never bought one before just used alot of pass down ones. . On top of that there are no free expansion slots should you ever want to install a better video card to replace that one. This PC should definitely be avoided for that reason alone.
I strongly suggest you go with Intel an Core2Duo for gaming. Even AMD fans like myself have to admit that they are better performers for gamers %26amp; power users.
Best Buy is an excellent place to buy a PC. They have great choices, %26amp; if you look for specials you can't go wrong. I know you already have a monitor, but look at this one just as an example. It has an incredibly powerful CPU (Quad Core 6600) with 4GB of ram %26amp; free expansion slots to upgrade the video card and add other devices in the future. has lost it. The internet has decided to run w/o add ons and I can't reverse this. Every time I try to watch a video on the computer it tells me to install flash player that I already have, Pop- ups about spyware/adware/virus have infected my computer keep coming up. Note: You should hit all ';Repair'; buttons even though it may not say ';Found!'; This will fix a wallpaper hijack everytime if all repair buttons are pressed.
If the problem persists, turn OFF System Restore, Right click My computer %26gt; select Properties %26gt; System Restore Tab %26gt; Tick Turn Off System restore on all drives and scan with the above programs in Safe Mode - tap F8 during boot before Windows splash screen and select Safe Mode.
After scans are complete and machine is clean remember to turn system restore back ON and create a new restore point.

i advise checking the shortcut where you run IE, it may say no add ons at the end

I am getting a new mouse for my computer, i have been looking at the the trackball optical mice ( not the old style ones, the ones with the big ball sitting ontop that you rotate around ) like logitech trackmans. OK, I have a lot of questions about upgrading my computer. It's an old Compaq Presario SR1103WM. The only upgrade I've done is adding 512 MB of RAM. This summer I was going to upgrade the RAM again, get a new P4 processor, and a new PCI graphics card to play games that are a few years old. I know about the RAM and the new processor. My questions are:
Will my motherboard handle all of this?
Someone told me my motherboard couldn't handle newer graphics cards, what kind will it take?
Will I need a new power supply for all of this?
Basically that's about it.

If you're gonna spend any more money upgrading that piece of crap, then you're crazy. PC's are disposable nowadays. It will only be as fast as it's weakest link, which would be the motherboard. My advice is to buy a used Intel Mac on ebay, buy Bootcamp if you really need to run Windows, and be worry free for the next few years like me.OK, I really need some computer advice?
because a lot of stores order their computers differently you will need to look up the model number for the power supply and calculate the new graphics card but i doubt you will need a new power supply if it is a recent computer.and the mother board can only handle so much RAM

Another thought is to check out Dell and HP for refurbished. They usually come with full warranty and if you are lucky enough to catch one, you can get a really good deal. Again, they go quickly so you have to keep checking in.

I know ram should be at least 3mb, harddrive should be at least 250gb, but i am not sure about the CPU specs.
