I need some computer advice?

what type of computer would i need to buy if i want to play games such as medieval 2 or world of warcraft?? i dont know much about computers and i can spend around 1000 dollars..thanksI need some computer advice?
I would all the way recommend that you check out hp.com and see what deals they have going on. I built my parents a nice 64 bit rig a few months ago for under 700 bucks.I need some computer advice?
I would build a computer instead of buying one at the store. You would get better stuff for your money. Go to a computer store such as microcenter or similar and they can help you. I build mine all the time.
Check this pc out.

go to best buy they'll take your money and give the worst advice. Not.
Build it yourself and you'll get much better performance and quality for a lot cheaper.

How do you install a sound advice on your computer?

my computer reinstalled its self. and now i cant hear music on my computer when i put my headset in. i even went out n bought some new head phones!!! and it still didn't work!!!How do you install a sound advice on your computer?
In general the OS (I assume u have Windows) identifies the Sound card and installs the sound drivers. If it can not find a driver you need to install the driver with the appropriate driver support from the manafucaturer of your sound device.

1. Take look if you have a CD which was part of the sound device

2. Is it an ';onboard'; (integrated on your motherboard) sound card the drivers are probably on the support CD of your motherboard.

3. Take a look at your BIOS settings: If you have an external Sound card you need to disable the integrated sound card on you motherboard. If you use the integrated soundcard make sure it is enabled. If you have no clue what I am taking about you might ask a friend to help. If you want to try start your PC and hit a specific key (mostly DEL-key) to enter the SETUP. DO not make any changes to the setting - try to find the TAB ';Internal device'; and locate Soundcard. Enable/Disable depending on what you have installed. You need SAVE and restart.

4. Start WINDOWS. If you are lucky WIndows now detects the sound card and installes the drivers. You might be asked to put in the Soundcard driver in your CD player. Your done.

5. Ok, you are here and it seems 4. does not work. Go to START-%26gt;Control Panel. Select ';System'; than Hardware-%26gt;Device Manager. You should identify in the first lines a yellow question mark. This indicated that Windows has detected a device but could not install/find the Driver. Double-Click on it and go to Driver and select ';Update Driver';. You need to have the Driver on hand (CD). This process should install the soundcard driver.

If you do not have a driver try to identify what sound card you have an search the internet. Go to step 5 and try to install again.

Good luck. How do you install a sound advice on your computer?
Go to your device manager and look to see if there is a yellow exclimation mark next to the audio device, if there is the right click the audio device and click properties then click either reload driver or roll back driver

Need advice on what I should get with my new computer?

I will get getting a desk top, either Dell or Gateway, in a couple of months. I called Dell up and talked it over but I really didn't understand everything and it sounded like more than I needed. Please tell me what I should ask for if I want my computer to do the following:

1-Play video games like the Sims 2.

2-burn cd's

3-Surf the net.

4-organize picutures.Need advice on what I should get with my new computer?
at least 1gig of ddr2 memory

at least 200 gigs of hard drive space

pci express with crossfire or sli

Pentium D processor

windows xp maybe with mce

card slots

DVD+-RW/DL for your drive. it isn't that expensive.

that's the basics and i wouldn't get a dell they are not that good.Need advice on what I should get with my new computer?
Any brand new desktop will do those things. The one you buy might not have enough memory to do some of those things, but you can always upgrade the memory.
if you are not doing any hard gaming, get a pentium D processor. It is the dual core chip and pretty good for normal tasks. Be cure to get 1 gigabyte of ddr or ddr2 ram. your optical drive should be a DVD+-RW, so you can also burn DVDs, which can hold a butt-load more than regular CDs. And since you are not doing hardcore gaming, don't worry about a super expensive graphics card, if you are getting from Dell you can just get the x300 Radeon. And if you are organizing a ton of pictures, get at least a 120 gigabyte hard drive.
a mid ranged pc should do it

for furture requirements for games get a computer that has PCI express

Most new computers (especially dell) should come with the burner DVD/CD

If it has windows you can surf the web

There are plenty of photo editing softwares on the web you can download but it usually comes with the pc

I need some computer advice please.I just found this?

Belarc advisers on my IE and it found a few things wrong with my security and wants to patch it or fix it and i am scared as i know nothing of computers and if it shuts me out or makes it too complicated i am then screwed over.I just got spybot yesterday and it found spyware on here also and hours later it worked like a charm'now i did a scan on this balarc and it too says i have bad areas.Do i dare do both with my anti virus included. What would you do? Thanks in advanceI need some computer advice please.I just found this?
I recommend that you download Google Chrome for your browser... it will import your bookmarks from IE. It is built on new architecture so it has more security than IE and is safer. I already have been saved from several ';drive bys'; with warnings from GC. It is easy to get. just google Chrome and you will be given a link for the download. Chrome is a better system all around.

You should always keep your computers software totally patched and updated. Viruses and spyware get installed on-there-own by exploiting vulnerabilities(security holes) in Windows and other installed software. This is what Belarc is suggesting that you fix. Apply security patches and/or upgrade to newest software versions.

While Belarc is OK , I prefer Secunia PSI (Personal Software Inspector)...it specialises in helping the user keep all their software patched and updated.

Its free.

A fully patched computer is the best way to prevent ';drive-by'; downloads of malware...those that infect by simply visiting a compromised website.

  • Any computer engineers willing to give advice?

I am going on my third year in college and am at the point where I NEED to figure out what I would like to do with the other 40 years of my life. After much research (and procrastination) I have been thinking about computer engineering. The thing is I only know what I have read about the field, which turns out to be emotionless textbook explinations.

    This point is-

Would anyone be able to break down (as much as you would be willing to) what it is ACTUALLY like to be a computer engineer. Not so much the whole ';Analyze requirements to develop overall hardware and software systems. Plan layouts and installation'; definition I can find on any site. I am talking about the humane side of it. Such as-

What is it like starting out?

How long does it take to fully feel like that industry is you, and not like you are trying to make it that way?

    Any regrets?

Is it more stressful or fun?

Anyone with any knowledge in the field that they are willing to offer would help me a lot!Any computer engineers willing to give advice?
Starting out its just like any other field, you first have to meet the people you work with and get comfortable with them.

I think that once you're in it you'll find out pretty soon if its for you. If you hate what you're doing then you probably shouldn't be doing it. But if you enjoy computers and learning about them, then you should be fine.

No regrets at all, I make good money, work with good people and enjoy what I do.

It can get stressful sometimes if you're in a crunch, but I don't think that theres any jobs out there that aren't like this.

Good luck.Any computer engineers willing to give advice?
I made a career of it, and had lots of fun doing so. There is a nice sense of accomplishment in designing a program to do something reasonable, have it avoid doing something unreasonable if you give it goofy instructions, and finally producing useful answers. Debugging a program is always a challenge, and the best debugging tools are tied in with the operating system so that you can contrive to find out at any point in the program's execution what it is doing and why it isn't doing what you want. The big problem for me was jumping into the middle of a project and trying to learn what the existing code was doing; it took months. Fortunately, the employer was patient; everybody else had already been there and done that.
I've been doing computer-based control systems and 'embedded systems' since the late 60's, I've always done my own interfaces (and lots of other hardware as well 鈽? and I speak a dozen or so programming languages. My advice to you would be; Unless you're planning on going for a PhD and working for a 'think tank' or other Government funded (and highly classified) research operation, you're better off getting an MBA or a degree in Law or Accounting or going to Medical School.

Most of the good jobs are going offshore these days, and (as with most engineering careers) age discrimination will eat you alive if you don't get into a supervisory or managerial position before you're 40'ish.

If I had it all to do over again (and knowing then what I know now), I'd have probably just stayed a professional studio musician (which is how I worked my way through college and several years of graduate school).

I need advice about Computer Certifications with New Horizons?

It is going to cost $17K for 5months for 9 Certifications. Is this a good idea?I need advice about Computer Certifications with New Horizons?
Absolutely not. (It doesn't matter what the certs are, by the way) If you have the intellectual capacity to earn 9 certs in five months, then you can do so with or without New Horizons (or anyone else). If you do not have that capacity, New Horizons will not magically give it to you.

Any of these study/training programs are basically a repackaging of material that is already out there for much less. As an example, the MCSE requires 7 exams giving you 10 certifications total. (7 MCP certifications, 2 MCSA certifications if you get Exchange and 1 MCSE certification)

The ';official'; study materials are available from Microsoft Press. For a few hundred dollars you get the written material, study CDs, practice exams and a trial version of Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition. If you can't pass the exams with all that, then you won't be able to pass them with New Horizons materials either.

The most important part of being a professional is trusting your own judgement. It's a matter of self confidence. Either you have what it takes to do this, or you don't. If you do, then do it. And do it on your own. I know many, many successful IT professionals. I don't know any who used a ';cram course'; to get there. Every single one of the best studied and passed on their own.

Is it worth $17,000 to let someone else hold your hand while you study?I need advice about Computer Certifications with New Horizons?
    nop

Tooooooooo Expencive, and will you get Company Certificate or Vendor Certificate ?
Yes, and no. If you have the money, then maybe. Taking classes generally helps you learn better. If you are mainly interested in certifications, then look for some self-study options.

If you decide to take classes, try a small amount first to get a feel for the training and the exam process. Then you will begin to see that what you need most to pass the exams is practice questions. You can search the web for the cert you are interested in, and look for study guides.
personally I think not... but if you do you better be ready to work your rear off. Your local community colleges should off the same course. At a fraction of the cost. It may take longer. But then you can take your cert tests as they come. Plus you get College credit. I checked out Horizon when I was laid off a few years ago... and decided to to with college.

9 certs in 5 months... your brain will be swimming

    Gaming computer advice?

I don't know much of computers, well a certain amount but not all that much. Im planning to buy a computer that can handle the latestet PC games, such as Crysis and what not. Would this computer be a good idea to get?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a>Gaming computer advice?
Don't get an AMD processor. They're cheaper, but less quality than Intel. My advice to you would be to build it yourself. Don't worry, it's not that difficult and YouTube videos can help you immensly. Find yourself a quality dual-core Intel (such as the E8400). But, other than that, the specs in that PC should guide you along your way.Gaming computer advice?
yes this would handle crysis just fine, just a tip - if you plan to overclock CPU or GPU then get Liquid Cooling. and as for the moron above (Link R) AMD is the way to go for gaming
I would go with this one below...

it has AMD's newest processor the Phenom:D

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3529073%26amp;CatId=1887
It will support it but the problem is it will be good for only 2 years or so...for the money worth I mean. You can buy a much better computer for $400 more and get much better quality. AMD is known for fast bit rates but there others that are much better.
If you can afford it, then thats a great computer.
That will handle crysis better with its sli'd 8800gt's than with the 8800 ultra, but i would wait till the geforce 9 series comes out later this month and maybe get an intel supported mobo with the q6600.

Or just build one with all that stuff, its cheaper :D
I agree with Link R, you should try to buy the parts and build it yourself. If you buy your parts, you can choose from a variety of different brands according to your preference and budget. Plus you would also save a good deal of money. It's not that hard to assemble a computer, read up on it, and if you learn how to build one, you can build more in the future. Good luck.

I want to reboot my computer but keep microsoft office any advice?

i got a laptop off my sister but i wanna restore it to its factory settings but keep a few applications any way i can back them up so i dont have to pay for them againI want to reboot my computer but keep microsoft office any advice?
    go to C:

    program files

copy the microsoft office folder and write to a disc

    reboot your pc

put the cd into the disc tray

copy the files back to somewhere on your hard drive

go into office 12 in your microsoft office folder

    search with search companion ';.exe';

sort the files in size ascending

    you will see these files:

    EXCEL

    OUTLOOK

    MSACCESS

    INFOPATH

    ONENOTE

    POWERPNT

    WINWORD

    GROOVE

Now to put them in an easy place

-Click on each individual one and right click copy

-On your desktop background right click copy shortcut

-now the logo for the particular application is on your desktop

this is the only way that i am aware of

when you copy back from the disc you don't need to put it in program files, it just has to be on your hard drive (or USB drive if your trying to get that)

    I hope this guide helps

it will work, by the way ive done it many times!I want to reboot my computer but keep microsoft office any advice?
sorry, but Matt L's answer won't work. Windows needs to know where certain files and settings are in the Registry. just copying the files over to your newly restored computer will give you the files, but Windows won't know how to run the programs. this works on *nix machines, but not Windows.

if you could copy all the registry keys associated with Office (and any other programs you want to keep), then no problem (in theory). you might be able to find software or tutorials out there to help you do that. but otherwise, unless you have the install CDs (and reinstall after the restore) then you're kinda stuffed.

that said, you could use OpenOffice instead of MS Office after you restore the PC, which is free and can open MS Office .doc files, etc.
you will need the discs unless you have the key for office. You can call microsoft and let them know what you are trying to do, and see if they will let you reinstall it after you restore your pc.
If you have the original disks ;-)) No problem. Otherwise I don't think you can do it.

The best way would be to search for documentation ( plenty online ) related to the language you're working in at school ( for example C/C++, Java etc. ), and some algorithms documentation ( plenty to go around as well ) and you should be fine since there are only 3 things that you need when programming: the language, algoorithms and some creativity/inspiration :).
The source varies depending on the programming language you are learning.

    Hi there,

I would suggest the best option to be www.logmein.com,

as this is wat even i am already using, the only condition is that in this case the computer that you want to access by a remote computer shoukd be turned on, if it is turned off, you wont be able to access it.

For example if you want to access your office computer from your home computer, please make sure that your office computer should be turned on for that, only then you can take the cmplete command of it even the complete desktop command of it with the help of www.logmein.com

There is one more better way, that is Remote Desktop Web Connection, but if you dont have much knowledge about the ports and all allowed to be open for Remote Desktop and all, please dont bother to do this..

Just go ahead and use www.logmein.com.

That is the best possible and the easiest way for you to configure and completely access your office pc from any remote pc whole across the globe provided you should have access to internet and you should have the pc turned on that you want to access from a Remote Computer..

its too easy to do that.

You just go to the pc that you want to access from any remote pc and install logmein free software from www.logmein.com

when u take up the first time installation, you have to sign up in www.logmein.com the same logging in details would be helpful to you to access your pc from anywhere in the whole universe with the help of internet..

Take care! Cheers and before starting to do any installations or anything, dont forget to create a Restore Point of your pc so that even if in case there is any problem in configuration or installation or anything, you dont need to panic, all you need to do is go to System Restore and Restore your System to the Earlier time....
U need to have static IP's at both the ends. If u are getting dynamic IP's then there is also a solution for the same. u can use dynamic dns at both the ends. Then by simple natting, u can get connected to ur office computer. but both the machines needs to be connected to the internet while accessing them.

U can also use LOGMEIN for the same.

I would suggest u to go for a wireless network if it is possible from your end. with this u can access the whole network.
If you do not wish others to be able to use the machine at the same time, go to http://www.logmein.com from the machine you want remote access to, install the free logmein software if you want full remote desktop access, or hamachi if you want file sharing.

This willl work with wired or wireless connections, do NOT buy additional modems, this idea would not work anyway.
hi..first u will need to have a public ip at both the ends.what type of internet connection u r using that needs to be checked.lets say its DSL then both the sides would get a public ip ( if its static ip then its much easier) u can use VNC or netmeeting like software to connect one pc to another

Check this page fro detailed info on these two:

WindowsXP is System Restore,(also on this page)

System Restore will wipe out anything in your My Documents folder,(photos, music, saved Word files, etc), and any downloaded programs, plus programs that have been put on after the System Restore Point. Be aware that viruses, and spyware get 'restored' also. Need to wipe them babies out, when you get your system restored,(turn off the System Restore option when wiping them out. After you're done, turn it back on) Make your computer faster? Heck yeah! Not as fast as adding more ram memory could do. Always delete Temporary Internet Files,(NOT Temp files!!), and Recycle Bin files, plus using a Registry cleaner helps a lot. I use CCleaner,(Crap Cleaner), free.

Edit: bboy, you can't add DDR2 to a computer that doesn't use it. Small Primer for you, Sdram=168 pins, DDR=184 pins, DDR2=240 pins, DDR3=240 pins with the locating notch in a different place. Physically can't be done, for ONE, TWO your system FSB, plus Northbridge/Southbridge chipsets, and BIOS must 'recognize' this ram,(plus other factors) Adding a large harddrive doesn't make your computer faster. If the spindle speed is faster,(5400rpm to 7200rpm, or 10,000rpm, or 15,000rpm), it will be faster, or if going from IDE,(Pata,... same, same), to Sata it's faster, but adding GB's of storage space doesn't.Resetting the Computer advice?
reset? why don't u just defrag the computer? it will get rid of useless junk to make it faster. Of course, if u reset the computer (which is similar to reinstallation) then everything will be gone except for the default stuff.

anyway, if u want to ';reset'; ur computer, then yeah what ur doing is reinstalling windows. and there are two things to it: 1) u will have two system boot. one of them will be ur old one, and the other, ur newly installed windows.

    2) the old one will have all ur stuff in it, and the new one will start from scratch.

however, this reinstallation will take up space.

my advice actually, if u want to make ur computer faster, is to buy some RAM...preferably DDR2...and some hard drive =P probably around 400-500gb
It should not erase what's on your computer but prior to your purchase, you may want to contact customer service to be sure. Its easy to buy things on the internet but would you buy a car without asking all the safety questions first? Same thing here..when in doubt, pick up the phone and call. Also you may want to back up your system to a safe place off of the computer you will be loading the new software. Good luck!!! :)
Anytime you reset your computer it erases 10 files from your hard drive. Too many times and you could lose a lot of your programs. Use with caution.

I work from home, using my computer as a customer service agent. I have been doing this now for almost two years. Good Morning America had a great program on this, and it listed the company I work for alone with others that you could apply for. Go to http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/TakeControl/story This was on the Internet on December 18. The company I work for is LiveOps.com Another site that is really good is http://www.telecommutingmons.com/ I hope this will help.

I have tried installing Halo and Battlefront 2. Both of these games show up as audio. Some games work such as Starcraft.Computer games aren't working on my computer. Whenever I start them, I can only hear the audio. Any advice?
Try to buy a new monitor card the best one i bought : The Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 .Computer games aren't working on my computer. Whenever I start them, I can only hear the audio. Any advice?
I actually found that on my computer too.

    The only way is to:

    Step 1: Start the game.

Step 2: If it is a black/blank screen, then go to a random program ( I suggest the one that is a small file and runs FAST ) and after doing it, swap back to the audio thing ( you game ) and it should work.

    If not then email me.
Check your graphics card and see if it can support the games you are trying to play. You can update your drivers for your graphics card, but if it can not support those specific games that really won't help. You may need a better graphics card which is easy to install after you buy one.
If you have internet that may be the case. So,unplug the wirefor the connectionThen put it back in.However if that is not the case try and get another hard drive.Even if that doesn't work To go to the control panel(Macs doesn't work on those games)and remove some things you don't need because it wastes space. Finally call a expert or get a new computer(It may be your graphic card)
Are they pirated? Try to update the games, also try to update your graphics driver.
Its your graphics card. Upgrade it.

If you're running XP, then yes. Adding a 100 mhz stick of ram will force all your ram to run at the slower speed of 100 mhz, but having the extra ram will help.

I'm building a computer for gaming. Can someone give me some advice?

I'm planning on getting an ASUS P5B Deluxe motherboard, which is DX10 capable, and a GeForce 8800 GTS 320mb videocard, with plenty of RAM to support Vista, but I am concerned about some perfomance on Vista with games such as Battlefield 2 and Medieval II Total War. I heard there may be performance loss when using higher shaders. If I stick to XP, I lose the DX10 capabilities, right? I would greatly appreciate some advice on which operating system is going to run these games the best, and whether I should forget about DX10 to avoid Vista troubles. Thanks!

P.S. I also heard there are problems with sound quality on Vista. Is that correct?I'm building a computer for gaming. Can someone give me some advice?
Okay vista does not play about 70-75 percent of newer games dx10 ain't worth the having to use buggy vista to use. If you are a serious gamer you should wait about 6 months+ to even think about vista because you will have nothing but problems with it like the 10000 other people that post problems here on YA. No games ';require'; dx10 yet so do not justify that as a reason to go to buggy vista.I'm building a computer for gaming. Can someone give me some advice?
I am assuming (and hoping) that you know about computers :)

if you don't, don't try to buy one.

anyways, window Vista is not really ';stable';, it has tons of problems so far. Sigh... I am not a gamer but with my limited computer knowledge I would advise Vista. Reason, looking at the games you listed, i am assuming that you would like Halo, and Halo 2 is ONLY for VISTA. If not, i would advise xp because dx10 is capabilities is cool, but it is not worth it if you don't even know if your games will run smoothly Vista. Plus, you need a high end computer to even run Vista.
Ok, firstly the games you listed don't even support DX10 so don't worry about that. You could simply dual boot XP and Vista. There are games coming out in the future that will support DX10 but for now it isn't needed. At the minute you would be better off with XP to play those games, but as I said you can just dual boot because Vista is a really really good operating system. And yes XP only offers DX9.

As for sound, this is generally true but with your motherboard you will have no problems. The more expensive components have got pretty good vista drivers by now so all should be fine.
That sounds like a nice rig you're going to build. Bravo. I game and build rigs as well and have held off of Vista because of the fact that Microsoft is notorious for bringing software to market that has so many bugs, they might as well include a can of ';Raid'; with it. XP on the other hand has been around for quite some time now and IS reliable. Do what you will, but imo, wait for about a year or so before getting Vista. DX10 isn't critical yet and the price point needs to come down a bit.

Old P4 computer advice: Have 256MB ram 133MHz, should i add nother 128mb but PC100 ram?? or leave it?

Yes I want more ram, but since my other stick of ram is 256mb, 133Mhz, should i add a stick but its slower speed??Old P4 computer advice: Have 256MB ram 133MHz, should i add nother 128mb but PC100 ram?? or leave it?
it's usually good practice to add the same amount of ram in each port. so you should look for more 256mb 133 ram to match what you have. try tigerdirect.com or newegg.com for starters.Old P4 computer advice: Have 256MB ram 133MHz, should i add nother 128mb but PC100 ram?? or leave it?
You will slow the faster ram down to the speed of the lower ram. You'll drop from 133 Mhz to 100 Mhz. Try it with just the 133 Mhz first and then try it again with the 100 Mhz as well as the 133. If you don't see any difference in performance, than you will know its worth keeping them both in there at the same time. If not, remove the 100 Mhz stick.

I bet its really expensive trying to buy this old SD RAM these days...I don't know if anyone is even making that kind of ram any longer (we are talking, like 1998 level technology).
512 MB to 1 GB of RAM is good for P4 at 1.3Mhz, why don't you get a kit from http://crucial.com. I have a P4 Northwood at 2.6 Ghz, and I got a 2GB kit from them for a very good price.

Live in Wollongong but I'd like advice about any schemes throughout AustraliaIn Australia: what advice about getting rid of old computer and electronic materials?
your council should generally have its own schemes for recycling electronic items

alternatively, you could offer things on freecycle (international, with groups in most towns or areas) - as a moderator on my group, there are a few people who take in broken computers etc, make new whole ones out of them and pass them on to charity etcIn Australia: what advice about getting rid of old computer and electronic materials?
contact the woollongong council, and ask them if they have a recycling service for electrical goods.

if you go into a post shop _australia post_ they have postable bags to put old mobile phones and batteries in to be recycled.

I would get a MacBook Air or a MacBook. You will find that the batteries on the Apple laptops are far superior than standard equipment elsewhere. The MacBooks feel much faster than similar hardware from other manufacturers because the operating system is infinitely better. A base configuration in the MacBook will last for years. You can also get a student discount and a free iPod Touch from Apple right now.

Whatever you do, don't get suckered into a Windows Vista laptop, with the next mediocre operating system from Microsoft just around the corner.
that may be true but more importantly it is the number of cells of your battery has, if its a regular sized mainstream laptop, a 6cell battery lasts 2 to 3hrs depending what your doing while a 12vcell battery would last twice that.

personally I think acer mainstream laptops from acer are a good choice, they have a nice look to their design, very smooth and also they are very good quality for your money, with excellent warranty. they cost around 500 to 700 dollars depending just how good you want it to be.
Just so you know, the faster the processor, the shorter the battery life. Same goes for GPU. So basically, the faster and more powerful the laptop, then the shorter the battery life will be.

Just something to keep in mind when selecting.
that super slim apple laptop than you can put in an envelope
For what your using them for, your going to want to look for smaller screens, like 15';.

Great advice on the basics of starting a business can be found at

    http://blog.boyblu.info/2009/05/08/how-t鈥?/a>

As far as billing the customers remotely, I would use Pay-Pal which is widely known. It allows you to send an invoice (for their records %26amp; yours) and gives your client the option to pay online via credit card or by mail via check.

As far as how you should charge, my advice would be to charge a flat rate/set up fee. Charging hourly can be uninviting to potential clients who may feel that you pad the time to make more money. Plus, as your skills increase, a service that may have taken you 1 hour two months into the business, may only take you 15 or 20 minutes after eight months into the business. In which case, your efficiency and skill would make you lose money...not what your going for.

Be sure to check out the blog which links additional resources such as the SBA and SCORE to get help in starting a successful business.

    Good luck

Any advice to a computer addict that lacks motivation for exercise activities?

I spend most of my day on my computer doing college work. website design, programming and general messing about. Any advice is appreiciated.Any advice to a computer addict that lacks motivation for exercise activities?
Hi! Ideally, from what I have found, the best way to get motivated, and keep motivated when it comes to exercise is to firstly, find a form of exercise you like doing and secondly, build in exercise into your daily life. For me, I love Davina McCall's power of 3 workout DVD (please don't cringe! haha, its great, I don't have to leave the house or anything for it). And as a second option I walk everywhere (not to mention, I'm too cheap for public transport and don't drive) so I walk to the local shops, I'm fortunate that I have a shopping presinct about 2 miles away and Asda 1 mile away - if you don't have this option your'e a bit more scuppered! Try doing at least 20 minutes brisk walked say, three times a week for a start - and gradually increase it, from what I recall you're meant to do 20 minutes three times a week to maintain your fitness, but if you don't have any, its probably a good place to start, not meaning to be assumptive or rude. To lose fat you don't actually need to do really hard exercise, your heart beat doesn't want to be THAT high. I find runners world website really useful for health/exercise info - and running info for that matter - take a look, its something like www.runnersworld.co.uk - not too difficult to fathom. I reckon the hardest part is prising yourself from your computer, i get a bit like that and some days, not so bad currently though. It helps when it is nice weather out. My usual plan is to force myself and once you get into a kind of rythem - or routine I suppose, its gets a bit easier. But you do have to take that first step, just keep in mind it doesn't have to be an Earth shattering one. Starting to waffle now...Any advice to a computer addict that lacks motivation for exercise activities?
Use a pedal generator to power your PC ;)
You can do the 'lazy man option' like me and have a pair of dumbells in your room, along with an ab-shaper (which I admit I still don't use enough)

Plus we got some exercise machine in the garage now.. the point I'm making is that going to the gym/jogging etc is too much effort, and money.

But if you got the equipment you need right in front of you (without hardly having to get off your a**), there becomes some motivation to actually use it!!

Plus women love a guy who works out, even if he is an ugly b******...

    :D
First, you should determine how much exercise you need. If you are overweight, then you'll obviously need more exercise than if you're at a healthy weight or in shape. If it's the latter, a 20 - 30 minute walk or jog a day could be sufficient enough as exercise to keep in shape and stay healthy. If it's the former, you're going to have to gradually ween yourself away from the computer; you can start by doing exercise 10 minutes a day, and then adding 5 - 10 minutes each day as you go along. The best motivation is within yourself, but if you do make time for it, as time goes on exercising will become easier and less of a chore.
There is a massage cushion that fits onto your chair, it works on either whole back and shoulders or lower back. It may not be excercise but at least it could ease those aching muscles fom being hunched over a computer all day. It just plugs in and you choose your setting. It works for 30 minutes and switches itself off. You can use it again later if you wish. I got one from my kids for my birthday and it is a life saver.
No hard feeling but look at your self in the mirror and you will find the motivation.

Nobody can tell you what to do exept your self.

    Regards................
Get a running machine and hook it up to your computer so that you can only power the PC by running!
Dont you feel fat? dont you stress at running up stairs?- can you run up stairs?

dont you worry about meeting any girlfriends? going out?

My advice is make it a rule. Make youself go to the gym/run/play football or whatever, and accept at first you may not enjoy it, but from my experience whe you do something you werent able to do- like run up 5 flights of stairs without stopping, you feel so so pleased that you can motivate yourself to keep going.

either that or turn off the computer. You'll end up like the male version of the cat woman.

I need advice on how to prenvent pop-ups, and other advertisements from crashing my computer?

I have seen many pop-ups and advetisements affecting my computer. I would like to know how to prevent that, Please let me know some good websites or program that I can download, to scan the computer. Thanks!I need advice on how to prenvent pop-ups, and other advertisements from crashing my computer?
I suggest you download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S%26amp;D (they鈥檙e free), install them, update them and run them. If they don't seem to be able to get rid of everything they report finding, try running them again, this time in Safe Mode. Safe Mode prevents many instances of malware from loading and protecting itself against deletion of its files.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

    To get into Safe Mode:

    1. Log out and reboot your machine.

    2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key

    3. Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.

    4. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. You may have to log in as Administrator to delete the bad files.

    5. When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Update and run both regularly, along with a good anti-virus package.

Good luck.I need advice on how to prenvent pop-ups, and other advertisements from crashing my computer?
run an anti spyware. your problem seems to be adware for me and anti-spyware removes things like this. if don't use any antispyware you can get one at http://www.2-spyware.com/review-spyware-鈥?/a>
Sounds like you have a problem with adware. There are several things you can do, but I'd recommend getting Spybot Search %26amp; Destroy, and after updating and a scan, be sure to use the Immunize function. I've found that this can protect you from many, many things. If you want, you can even make Spybot Search %26amp; Destroy automatically update and immunize itself (you need to go into advanced mode so you can edit the settings). I'd also recommend using Spybot Search %26amp; Destroy's tools. With them, you can activate a bad download blocker, write protect your hosts file, and block a list of notorious sites. Hope this helps!

Every microphone I have gotten for this computer has had a problem with feedback. I am using computer headphones and an attached mic with the headset. Any ideas of what I can do to fix this?My microphone for my computer is having feedback problems. Any advice?
thats probably why. A microphone is for your voice and not for other things. When playing music, it will cause feedback because of background noise. Double click the speaker icon on the task tray in the lower right corner of your computer. Then, go to Options, and change the mixer device to the input instead of output. Now, you may have some advanced options that help with feedback. If you are playing through your speakers as well, your mic and speakers may be too close, that will cause feedback as well.

    Building new computer advice?

im making a new computer, 790i xfx motherboard core 2 quad @ 2.3ghz sli two 9600gt 8 gb of ddr3 500 gb sata hdd, how much power should i get is 600w enough? also what is a good heat sink that will keep the cpu cool, is the stock good enough?Building new computer advice?
Whatever size psu you get make sure it is a modular! But I'd say 750 min, me I would go 850 or 900. On the heat-sink DO NOT GET water-cooled; sure they keep it cooler but they all leak eventually. With the 8gigs of ram you'll need a 64bit OS. If you want the most bang for your buck go with a WD VelociRaptor HDD. For the vid card go for a 4890 series gpu, or wait a few months for directx11 cards! And for your cpu the fastest out there is Intel's Pentium D 965 Extreme Edition with a core speed of 3.73 ghz and easy overclocks to 4.26 ghz. And did I mention this dual core baby is only $99.99?Building new computer advice?
600 would probably be ok but id go for atleast 750
There are free to use PSU calculators on the internet. I prefer the one on the Thermaltake site.

Fill in the blanks and it will suggest what you need.
Can you please explain WHY you want 8gb of DDR 3 ram? That's the equivalent of 16GB ram, and windows can only use a maximum of 4gb. Waste of money in my opinion.
That sounds like a awesome build. 600watt should be enough just make sure the power supply is SLI or crossfire ready and has the connectors you need. A cooler I would recommend is the freezer 7.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as鈥?/a> You should also use artic silver for your thermal compound.

How do I read the computer speakers specs? I want speakers with good quality, any advice?

Most retailers only offer the basics, but that's enuff to keep shopping simple.

First is range: Human hearing maxes out at 20-20,000 hertz, so any speaker boasting a high-range of 35,000hz is wasting your time, unless it's for your dog.

Subs: A good subwoofer is essential if you want to feel the rockets go off in your games, or you just like to see grandma's belly bounce when you crank up your tunes...the amount of power (measured in watts) needed is up to you, and the size of the room your system is in...but 20Watts is a good start.

S/N ratio: The Signal-to-Noise ratio is determined by the quality of the components used to build the setup, and lower numbers (measured in decibles[db])are best. How do I read the computer speakers specs? I want speakers with good quality, any advice?

Actually, higher SNR numbers indicate 'cleaner' signals. Speakers with SNR of 76.4 aren't quite as good in terms of quality as speakers with SNR of 82.6 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S鈥?/a> under ';Electrical SNR and acoustics';)

Any advice for my new computer?

I'll be getting one in the next few months. I want a good deal on a PC. Any advice and/or experiences you wanna share would be super.Any advice for my new computer?
Depends completely on what you're willing to spend and what you're going to be using the computer for.

You could go for the OEM dealies like Dell or HP and get a ';decent'; system for less but then you're stuck with an OEM system and I don't like those. I prefer to make my own, just personal preference.

You can go to various computer part websites/shops and buy the parts for the computer slowly and end up spending more than yo would for the OEM but you'd get a superior system in most cases

Pentium CPUs are good for most things but when it comes to gaming, you want to look into getting a AMD.

More ram = more power. You'd notice a difference with more RAM than you would with a higher CPU. RAM lets you do more at once.

Graphics card. Big debate here on what is best for what. Geforce seems to be pulling ahead right now for the best of the best graphics.

Do your sound work with other programs?

If not, it is not your browsers.

Do you have red circle with line showing over your speaker icon on your task bar? Click on the icon and remove the mute by unchecking the mute box.

No red circle, press winkey and R key. In run command box type in ';devmgmt.msc';. Any yellow flags? Yes re-install your sound drivers. If no yellow flags then check on plus sign near sound and re-install your drivers with a update. Check with maker of computer or sound.

Still no sound, speakers are blown or not plug in or not turn on.

Still not working, then sound circuit on motherboard is out. Replace the motherboard or add sound card.
Most of those companies charge $125 per hour to resolve your issues. I would suggest asking the questions here or asking a friend that knows about computers.
go to your computers manufactures website and update your sound drivers

    If you're running Windows...

    1. Make sure you're using a hardware firewall (a network appliance like a Netgear/Linksys/etc. firewall/router). The firewall inside of Windows doesn't count.

    2. Check for Windows Security Patches weekly.

    3. Run Anti-virus and anti-spyware software and update/run them at least monthly.

    Or...

Secure all of your Ports so that they do not become hijacked, 80, 81, and 8080 in particular (your internet ports) so they can not connect or DOS you with multiple packets. Get a Firewall operating on your system and Spyware Protection (Protects from RATS, a hackers favorite tool). :)
well, stay away from grey-area website (like hacked program website,etc)... instal a firewall and antivirus in your pc.
    1. Get a router. Most routers these days also serve as decent firewalls, and provide an extra measure of security.

    2. Don't do ordinary work from an administrator account. That way, if someone tries to exploit your account to do something bad, he'll fail because your account probably won't have the proper permissions.

    3. Don't use Windows. It is an incredibly poorly designed OS that has no place in a secure computing environment.

    4. Whatever OS you use, put some effort into understanding it so that you can understand where its weak spots are.
    Get a mac!

Is any advice out there re. free security programs available for my computer?

I have been told there are free, reliable security programs available which are free. Could some computer wiz out there please help.Is any advice out there re. free security programs available for my computer?
I have set up a simple process of applications, which will be your security suite for your computer, which will help detect and remove, viruses, malware, and all types of spyware.

There are some of the top FREE software’s that you can download, when building a security suite.

    1) Anti Virus Program:

Avast Anti-Virus Version 4.8 Home Edition

This software is one of the highest rated free anti-virus programs, it has everything the big names have to offer, and is well trusted and reliable, I have used it and love it!

Reminder: Never have more then one Anti-Virus Program installed, because they will both interfere with each other and slow down your PC! So remember, only have one Anti-Virus program on your computer! Avoid an anti-virus called AVG (free version). It is wildly popular but has poor virus detection rates.

    Download here:

    http://www.avast.com/

    2) Anti Spware/Malware:

    SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition

This Anti-Spyware software is highly rated and a free program. It has a very loyal and popular user base, and it definitely gets rid of the “nasties” (hard to remove spyware).

Reminder: Having more then one Anti-Spyware software is okay, because they do not interfere with each-other, but I recommend no more then two anti-spy ware programs.

    Download Here:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/

    3) Second (Backup) Anti Spyware/Malware:

    Ad Aware Free Edition

This is well trusted software, which can detect things that SuperAntiSpyware may not, they both work well together, and this should also be used on a weekly basis.

    Download Here:

    http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2008/30…

    4) Firewall

    Windows Default Fire Wall (Reccomended)

I recommend you to use the Windows Default one, because it is actually pretty good, and is easy to use.

If you are not satisfied with it, or want something that you might think is better then download

    Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0.21.329.

It is one of the few free firewalls that will work (and work well) on Vista as well as XP and 2000.

    Download Here:

    http://www.comodo.com/

    5) Cleaning Software

    CC cleaner

This is a trusted software, it is small and compact, and extremely easy to use, it cleans out all old cookies, files and can save you many megabytes of space! This goes along very well with the all the other programs.

    Download Here:

    http://www.ccleaner.com/

    6) Malware and Spyware Blockers/Alerter:

And to help protect your computer from ever getting infected with malware in the first place, and also to help you for future use.

    SpywareBlaster

Helps to immunize your computer again certain selected malware.

    Download Here:

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareb…

    7) Site Advisors warns you when visiting a potentially malicious web-site:

    Download Here:

    http://www.siteadvisor.com/

    8) Best Available Internet Browser

    Mozilla Firefox 3

This is easily the best internet browser, it is a lot safer, faster and more effiecent then internet explorer! I SUGGEST immediately install this, it has about 20% of the browser market, and it is the fastest growing browser! You can customize it, add add-ons and so on, also a lot of browser hijackers target Internet explorer, rather than Firefox, which is a huge benefit!

    Download Here:

    www.firefox.com

And always keep your Windows and all your installed software 100% updated and patched with all critical and security updates from the vendors THIS IS A MUST! In Internet Explorer just click Tools then Windows Updates.

All these softwares are highly rated, well trusted and are FREE! I have given the correct links, and if you have concerns, read the user comments and CNET comments on download.com!

You can also e-mail or private message me if there are any concerns or questions! Is any advice out there re. free security programs available for my computer?

Any advice on what to do when your computer fan makes a grinding noise? how do you find decent repairperson?

My friend built us this desktop as a wedding present three years ago so we have no customer service per se. The fan has gotten really loud, like a car motor almost. I'd replace it myself if I knew how. Also, seems like it's connected to the powersource.

Help?! Do I try to fix this myself or take it to a shop? Know of any good shops in NYC? Will this just cost more than a new one?Any advice on what to do when your computer fan makes a grinding noise? how do you find decent repairperson?
Fan replacement is easy! Be brave and open the case; there's very little chance you will damage anything unless you have the dexterity of a gorilla.

    1. Go find a medium phillips head screwdriver. Newer consumer cases usually have tool-free cases, but you'll need it anyway to remove the fan in a few minutes.

    2. Remove the power cable first, along with every other cable (go ahead and draw a picture of the back of the computer and label every cable with tape if you are worried about hooking them all back up correctly).

    3. Open the case. There are only a handful of machines that defy patient logic.

    4. Find the fan. It usually has 2 to 4 screws holding its enclosure in, and one or two cables. Take a photo of exactly where each cable plugs into the power supply and/or motherboard if you believe you may forget. If the fan is PART OF the powersupply (where the power cord plugs in) then you'll need to replace the whole power supply.

    5. Unplug the fan cables and unscrew the fan enclosure's 2 to 4 screws. Keep the screws safe because new fans don't always come with the right screws.

    6. Bring the old fan to CompUSA or whereever and tell the punk in the red shirt you need to replace it. Neither get the cheapest NOR pay more than $25 for a replacement fan unless you know what you are doing. Make sure the new cables look like the old cables.

    7. Put the new fan in whereever you took the old fan out. Plug in the new cables.

    8. Close the case. Reconnect all monitor, speaker, keyboard, mouse, printer, network, USB cables. Reconnect power cable.

    9. Restart and enjoy the tranquil quiet!Any advice on what to do when your computer fan makes a grinding noise? how do you find decent repairperson?
It's really a very simple repair if you have a screwdriver and some very basic mechanical skills. It consists only of removing the old fan, buying a replacement (about $8) and popping it in there. A couple lead wires are all that attach the thing to the power supply.

If you're still hesitant, try Best Buy's Geek Squad. They're reasonable and can handle this sort of thing in a couple minutes.
    Try P.C.Doctors. I think they're nationwide.
Sometimes th fan blades can become out of alignment. Try bending them into place. If that doesn't work, buy a new one and swap it out
It really depends on which fan is going out, generally speaking there are about three choices for fans, 1) the fan on top of the heatsync 2) the case fan 3) Power Supply fan.

If it's cast number 2, the easiest of the three, you could probably replace that your self by ordering a new fan from a place like newegg.

If it's either of other two, I would take it to the Geeksquad, and have them replace the PSU if that's the case of the HeatSync fan. If you take it to geek squad it will probably run you anywhere from $60 to $90 not including parts. and the part cost can vary from $8-$75

Am needing an intelligent computer builders advice?

ok, have put a second hardrive into my comp. and am still using first one, quite simply i have 2 hard drives. hooked everything up right, everything works, comp recognizes new drive. My prob is that i want to put all my music and download programs and itunes programs there, not sure what to do next. Help!Am needing an intelligent computer builders advice?
it is not recomended moving programs from their location...

    (they will probably stop working)

it is not recomended to install programs in a hard disc drive diferent from your systems harddrive...

I recomend you move you music FOLDERs(not programs, just the music, videos etc you have on your HD to the other HD)

and change the settings of your download programs to know the location of the new folder of your media...Am needing an intelligent computer builders advice?
    Right-click ';My Documents';

    Click ';Properties';

';Move'; it to the new drive.

    All of the above applies, of course, only if you keep your iTunes and docs under ';My Documents';

Do not move ';Program Files'; folder, you'll break your Windows.
Good job on what you've done so far. Most of us use either multiple drives or have several hard drives partitioned for various uses. To move files, simple files, like music or video, is as easy as cut and paste. You know where those files or folders are, simply copy and paste them to the new drive.

Moving programs is different tho. The best thing to do is to uninstall and than reinstall them so that when you have the option of where to install, you can select your new location. For example, I have a large extra drive and I created several folders in it. One is for PC Games, another is for Programs and Applications, another for Torrent Downloads, etc. So maybe try making a folder for Music and another for Download Programs, etc.

The important thing is to make sure your download programs point to the new download storage location, ie, where stuff goes when you download it. For example if you were using Bearshare, it would currently be pointing to your download location as C:\Program Files\Bearshare\My Shared and you must make sure this is changed to your new file download location. Assuming your new drive is called ';D';, just make sure it points to D:\Music, or whatever you call it.

You will still see your installed programs on your start menu too, under Programs, regardless of which drive you install or reinstall them to.

    Hope that helps!
